So, you?ve bought your first home. Congratulations! This can be an exciting and overwhelming time in your life. It seems as though there is so much to do with all of the unpacking and settling in, not to mention taking care of all the little home improvements that you want to check off your list. As fun as it can be to personalize your home, be sure to keep some of your budget for the bigger priorities that may come up. One such project is ensuring that your roof is in good condition.
If you had a home inspection done prior to purchasing your new home, the inspector may have found problems with the roof and recommended roof repairs or complete replacement. You should address those problems as soon as possible. If you did not have an inspection carried out, you can do a preliminary visual inspection yourself or call in a roofing contractor to take a look at the roof for you.
Replacing a roof can be quite expensive but putting it off can be even more costly in the long run if you end up with water damage in your home. All types of roofing materials will have a specific lifespan and will need to be replaced at some point. However, in some cases, your roof may just need some repairs that would, in fact, prolong how long it lasts. Getting smaller issues taken care of early on can save you a lot of money and hassle in the long run.
Signs that your roof needs attention:
? Loose or missing shingles
? Damaged, cracked, curled shingles
? Moss or algae growth on the roof
? Shingle decay, sometimes demonstrated by crumbling or the presence of mold or mildew
? Ice buildup or ice damming on the roof in the winter
? Water in the attic after heavy rains
? Spots or stains on interior ceilings or walls
If your roof is demonstrating any of the above signs, make it a priority to have it repaired of replaced. For more information regarding roof repair or roof replacement, talk to your local professional roofer and get their opinion on the state of your home?s roof.
