Jan. 30, 2013 ? A pair of University of Colorado Cancer Center studies published this month show that the milk thistle extract, silibinin, kills skin cells mutated by UVA radiation and protects against damage by UVB radiation -- thus protecting against UV-induced skin cancer and photo-aging.
"When you have a cell affected by UV radiation, you either want to repair it or kill it so that it cannot go on to cause cancer. We show that silibinin does both," says Rajesh Agarwal, PhD, co-program leader of Cancer Prevention and Control at the CU Cancer Center and professor at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The first study, published in the journal Photochemistry and Photobiology worked with human skin cells subjected to UVA radiation, which makes up about 95 percent of the sun's radiation that reaches Earth. The Agarwal Lab treated these UVA-affected cells with silibinin. With silibinin, the rate at which these damaged cells died increased dramatically.
"When you take human skin cells -- keratinocytes -- and treat them with silibinin, nothing happens. It's not toxic. But when you damage these cells with UVA radiation, treatment with silibinin kills the cells," Agarwal says, thus removing the mutated cells that can cause skin cancer and photo-aging.
Specifically, the study shows that pretreatment with silibinin resulted in higher release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the UVA-exposed cells, leading to higher rates of cell death.
The second study, published this month by the same authors in the journal Molecular Carcinogenesis shows that instead of beneficially killing cells damaged by UVA radiation, treatment with silibinin protects human skill cells from damage by UVB radiation, which makes up about 5 percent of the sun's radiation reaching Earth.
Again, remember Agarwal's suggestion that the prevention of UV-induced skin cancer can happen in two ways: by protecting against DNA damage or by killing cells with damaged DNA. With UVA, silibinin kills; with UVB, it protects, in this case by increasing cells' expression of the protein interleukin-12, which works to quickly repair damaged cells.
"It has been 20 years of work with this compound, silibinin," Agarwal says. "We first noticed its effectiveness in treating both skin and solid cancers, and we now have a much more complete picture of the mechanisms that allow this compound to work."
Agarwal and colleagues continue to test the effectiveness of silibinin in cancer prevention and treatment in cell lines and mouse models, and are working toward human trials of silibinin-based therapeutics.

In interviews with LifeSite News, three American Catholic bishops said that they were prepared to go to jail rather than accept implementation of the contraceptive mandate in the Obama administration?s health-care reform policy.
Bishop Alexander Sample of Marquette, Michigan (recently named to become Archbishop of Portland, Oregon); Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh; and Archbishop Samuel Aquila of Denver said that they would risk prison rather than accept the terms of the Obama mandate.
When he was asked the same question, Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington, DC, declined to give a direct response. Saying that he still hoped for an agreement with the Obama administration that would defuse the conflict, the cardinal said: ?We take this one day at a time, and I'm hopeful that we're going to be able to resolve this.?

Updated at 8:30 p.m. ET: LOS ANGELES -- Veteran pornography actor Ron Jeremy, one of the industry's biggest stars, was in intensive care and undergoing surgery for an aneurysm near his heart in Los Angeles, his manager said on Wednesday.
Jeremy, 59, the star of more than 2,000 adult films, drove himself to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles early on Wednesday after suffering from chest pains.
"He just felt chest pains, like a very heavy weight," Jeremy's manager Mike Esterman told Reuters.?
Jeremy's medical team later released a statement via Esterman to E! News saying the surgery went "smoothly" and that the adult film star was "resting with complete privacy."
Jeremy, nicknamed the "Hedgehog" for his short and hirsute body and known for his large mustache, parlayed his porn star fame into mainstream celebrity status by appearing on the American reality television series "The Surreal Life" in 2004, and by being featured in an advertisement by animal-rights advocates PETA.
His memoir, "The Hardest (Working) Man in Showbiz," was published in 2007.

Android (4.0+): When we last discussed Carbon, it was still in beta and required root. Now, the app has emerged from beta with a ton of new features, is available at Google Play, and doesn't require root to do any of the awesome things it can do.
Carbon is the work of Koushik "Koush" Dutta, the same developer behind ClockworkMod, one of our favorite Android utilities. This newest project is a sharp-looking backup and syncing tool for your Android device, one that can take your apps, app data (saved games, preferences, and so on), contacts, and other important data and save it to your phone's SD card or your desktop.
The app comes in two flavors: the free version backs up all of your data and stores it on your SD card or your desktop. For a $5 USD in-app upgrade, the premium version ditches the ads and unlocks a ton of additional features, including the ability to perform automatic hands-free backups on a schedule you set, and the ability to save your data to Dropbox, Google Drive, or Box.net in addition to your SD card or desktop. The premium version also allows you to sync two Android devices, so moving to a new phone is a snap.
The only caveat is that Carbon doesn't work on Motorola devices. Koush explains that Motorola phones "have a bug that break Android's backup mechanism," one that Motorola/Google will have to fix. He does note that if you have a Motorola phone and Carbon does work for you, he wants to hear from you. You can grab the app at the Google Play link below.

Beeston is ?on the up? with the suburb?s football club striving to keep the area?s youngsters on the ?straight and narrow.?
Terry Rowe, 56, has been involved at Beeston St Anthony?s FC since 1975 and spent 20 years working in the area?s police force.
And the football club?s vice-chairman believes the Leeds suburb has improved enormously over the last 40 years with Beeston?s leading sports side playing a key role.
Beeston St Anthony?s now boasts three Saturday sides and one Sunday team with a blossoming Academy outfit the latest string to the King Field-based outfit?s bow.
The vice-chairman is adamant that Beeston is now a better place to be.
?Beeston is on the up, there?s no doubt about that,? said Rowe. ?The council have worked hard to improve the area and you can see that.
?That is rubbing off on the residents of the community and we can see a difference with the kids coming through - their attitudes are different and they are a little bit more responsible.
?We are striving to keep Beeston?s young lads interested and keep them on the straight and narrow.?
As well as having a positive influence on the area, Beeston St Anthony?s are also proving highly successful with the club?s first team the reigning West Yorkshire League champions.
They are champions close to their Beeston roots.
?I?d say 85 per cent of our players are from Beeston which is great,? said Rowe.
?As an area, Beeston has gained a bad reputation over the years but that?s a little bit unfair really as things have definitely improved.?
Just as the Beeston St Anthony?s success story looks destined to further improve based on the recent introduction of a new Academy team.
?We are working on that now because these lads are short of games,? said Rowe. ?We were just a bit too late to join a league. We have got a hell of a lot of young kids that are 16, 17 and 18 who are champing at the bit.?

Major U.S. stock benchmarks fell on Wednesday, after dour U.S. growth data reinforced a decision by the?Federal Reserve?to maintain its commitment to massive economic stimulus.
In a decision widely expected by analysts, the Fed emphasized that it would stick to its bond-buying program. That outcome was cast into doubt just weeks ago, after minutes from the central bank's last policy meeting showed some Fed members were growing concerned about ultra-low borrowing costs.
The decision converged with data that showed the U.S. economy?shrank by an annualized?0.1 percent in the final three months of 2012, and reinforced expectations that the Fed would likely err on the side of more stimulus.
Despite a run of strong corporate earnings, the GDP data fanned concerns about the economy's ability to absorb higher tax rates ? some of which took effect when the payroll tax holiday expired at the beginning of the year ? and efforts to cut government spending.
"The real risk out there, and the Fed was very vague in how they characterized it?I think we're going to see major government spending cuts that are going to come through sequestration," Diane Swonk, chief economist and senior managing director,?Mesirow Financial, told CNBC's "Street Signs"
"That is something the Fed has to deal with. That not only means weaker growth, which justifies lower rates, but it also means more Fed action."
After floating for most of the session between modest gains and losses in directionless trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed about 44 points, trading around 13,910.19, drifting further away from the psychologically-important 14,000 barrier being watched by analysts.
The S&P 500 Index slipped by nearly six points to 1,501.93, while the the Nasdaq dipped five points to trade above 3,142.31.
The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered to be the market's best gauge of fear in the market, rose above just shy of 14.

Meanwhile, after weeks of buying on the rumor of?Research In Motion's new BlackBerry 10, investors on Wednesday opted to sell the fact.
The company ? which officially changed its corporate name to BlackBerry ? unveiled the new smartphone that many analysts see as essential to its long-term survival. Still, investors voted with their feet as RIM shares?plunged more than ten percent in volatile trading. It finished the session near near $14.
Volume in the company's stock this month is 85 percent higher than the average daily volume in the previous three months, 34.2 million. RIM?shares?are?up about 29 percent this month, its largest gain?since November, when it rose 46 percent.
The GDP report came just on the heels of a policy decision by the Fed. Some analysts, however, saw the slippage in U.S. growth as a temporary blip.
"[The] bottom line is that while this is the first reading for output for the final quarter, both inventories and trade could be revised firmer," said Andrew Wilkinson, chief economic strategist at?Miller Tabak.
"We expect 2013 to start with a rebound in inventory building, something evidenced by firm durable goods orders that will likely filter through into shipments moving into" the first quarter of this year, he added.
Still, markets were encouraged by a spate of strong quarterly earnings reports.?Boeing?rose one percent after the company reported fourth-quarter profit of?$1.28 per share, above analyst estimates. The company dismissed speculation that its bottom line would take a hit from widely publicized problems with its 787 Dreamliner, and expects to maintain its production and delivery forecast.
Amazon.com?surged by more than four percent, trading near $270 and within striking distance of a new 52-week high despite seeing a?fourth-quarter shortfall?on both the top and bottom lines. Analysts preferred to focus instead on what they expect will be Amazon's impressive profit margins.
Looking ahead, social networking giant Facebook notched gains ahead of its fourth quarter earnings, scheduled to be released after the bell. After broad pessimism pushed its stock below $20 last year, the company's stock has steadily climbed back above $30.

Huawei may have its 6.1-inch Ascend Mate for the convenience of hiding your face, but ZTE's also prepping its very own tabletphone to go head to head with its main rival. Dubbed the Grand Memo (V9815), this 5.7-inch 720p device made a surprise appearance at a ZTE event in Hong Kong today, and we got to snap some photos of it. The device looks identical to the P945 leaked earlier this month but packs some slightly different specs: 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro (same as the more premium Grand S), 13-megapixel camera, 8mm-thick body and Android 4.1.2.
While the specs aren't too shabby, our colleague Stone Ip said the choice of finish on the body didn't feel as nice as the Grand S', and the silver bezel made the Grand Memo look worse, but in ZTE's defense it was a prototype and the design may improve in the retail version. On a more positive note, the new phone does include a microSD slot despite its slimness, and it comes with a "one-hand" T9 keyboard that can stick to either side of the screen for better single-handed typing, just too bad we were asked not to take a video of the device at the time. That said, the Grand Memo will be officially unveiled at MWC next month, so stay tuned for more.

The halls of every middle school in America are filled with teenagers looking to find themselves, express themselves and fit in with the crowd. But it?s what happens at home, at night, that can lead to some of the problems those teens may put on display.
Seventh-graders who are exposed to alcohol ads on television ?- and who say they like the ads - may experience more severe problems related to drinking alcohol later in their adolescence, according to a study published Monday in the medical journal Pediatrics.
The study
Researchers at the School of Community and Global Health at Claremont Graduate University in California hypothesized that ?adolescents who like alcohol advertisements will be more likely to elaborate on the content of the ads (e.g., imagine themselves in the scene), and as a result, they will be more likely to be persuaded to try the product.?
As consenting adult consumers,?the more appealing an advertised product is, the more likely?it will be?purchased. Secondly ?? drinking is oftentimes thought of as cool, rebellious ? sometimes even an ?adult? thing to do. These two notions, taken together, can be a recipe for problems when it comes to children and alcohol.
Participants were recruited from 23 randomly-selected public middle schools in Los Angeles County. The seventh-grade students were preliminarily surveyed as to how often they watched 20 popular TV shows. Data on alcohol advertising during these programs was subsequently obtained from Nielsen Media Research.
The study?s authors then conducted follow-up surveys, which included still pictures from the television advertisements, none of which contained any brand names or logos. An open-ended item asked participants to write down what product was being advertised; independent judges decided whether responses were indeed related to the advertisement or not.
The survey also included three items to assess how much participants liked the alcohol ads they viewed on TV. The teens were asked if they thought the alcohol ads were funny or sexy, and whether they liked the alcohol ads better than other ads. ?These items,? explain the authors, ?measure an affective or emotional reaction to alcohol ads that has been useful in both the study of alcohol advertising and by the advertising industry in general to estimate the potential effectiveness of advertising copy.?
Results
?Exposure to advertising was found to have a significant correlation with alcohol use, particularly among girls,? the study concludes. ?Liking the ads was connected with alcohol-related problems (defined as not being able to do homework, getting into fights, neglecting responsibilities, or causing someone shame or embarrassment), particularly in boys. For both boys and girls, the more they were exposed to the ads and liked them, the more their alcohol use grew from seventh to 10th grade.? That, of course, leads to a greater potential for alcohol-related problems later on.
The researchers were also careful to consider additional factors, such as the total amount of time spent watching television, observing friends drinking, observing well-known adults drinking, age, gender, ethnicity, language, parents? occupation and education, as well as enrollment?in extracurricular sporting activities.
Asked for a response by CNN, Anheuser-Busch referred questions to the Beer Institute, which said a statement would be forthcoming. MillerCoors did not respond to a request for comment.
Recommendations
The study's authors recommend teaching children about "the design of persuasive messages in the media?to help the avoid undue influence by the media on their behaviors. Second, it is?important to have a comprehensive policy to limit the exposure of children to alcohol ads on television and on other media."
The urgency of finding a solution to the epidemic of underage drinking was underscored further by another study released Monday in Pediatrics. Researchers at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism found that in 2010, 36% of 10th graders drank, 28% binged, and 23% were drunk in the past month. Although 82% of the high school sophomores reported seeing a doctor in the past year, only 54% were asked about drinking, and just 17% were advised to reduce or stop drinking.
?Efforts are warranted to increase the proportion of physicians who follow professional guidelines to screen and counsel adolescents about unhealthy alcohol use and behaviors that pose health risks,? conclude the second study?s authors.

It is good to know that there are already companies that are specializing in providing loans to people. Some example includes non resident home loan, equity finance mortgage or EFM, investment home loans, low doc home loans, mortgage refinance, self employed home loans, first home owners construction grant, debt consolidation home loans and many more to mention. The financial institution is helping self employed individuals and those who are in the contracting sector to get the loans that they need for the situation.
The company will simply have to check certain details to support that you are indeed capable to pay them back the loan to a certain period of time. For instance, they will have to look to your annual income or the history of your employed status. That is where they will base their decision to offer the loan that you need as of the situation. At times, they are letting people borrow through annualized rate and of their contract salary. If you are wondering what you are going to do in order to qualify for the loans mentioned above, well it is important that you simply collect the necessary documentation needed. For example you can include your past pay slips or your tax records. You can also include the information about your future contracts and then the bank statements too. You may want to work part time to a company in order to let the financial company see that you are indeed earning regular money. Check the site of Future Financial for loan assistance today.

More than 15,500 Connecticut residents got the jump on tax season and have already filed their returns, the state Department of Revenue Services said this week.
Tax season officially opened in Connecticut on Jan. 22 and by Jan. 27, the DRS had issued 1,225 refunds. Most were done electronically, according to the department. On Tuesday, the DRS also said the IRS had pushed about 12,000 filings through to the state,? though the IRS is not actually processing federal returns until Jan. 30.
Last year at this time, the DRS said 8,700 people had filed their returns, so people are getting their taxes in early.
This could provide a pop for retail or residents could use it to continue to pay down debt as consumers across the country have been doing for more than a year.
Some Connecticut taxpayers might experience a slight delay in getting their returns as the department has adopted new rules on verifying people?s identities.
But it isn?t like the delay the IRS has experienced this season.
America?s taxman has claimed the fiscal cliff negotiations forced it to delay processing federal tax returns. The IRS was also dealt a legal blow earlier this month when a federal judge ruled it didn?t? have the authority to regulate non cpa, attorney tax preparers. Anyway, the IRS has promised it will eventually send out refunds.

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has successfully launched a live monkey into space, the state news agency IRNA said on Monday, touting it as an advance in a missile and space program that has alarmed the West and Israel.
There was no independent confirmation of the report, which quoted a defense ministry statement. It said the launch coincided "with the days of" the Prophet Mohammad's birthday last week but gave no date.
IRNA said the monkey was sent into space on a Kavoshgar rocket. The rocket reached a height of more than 120 km (75 miles) and "returned its shipment intact", IRNA reported.
The Islamic Republic's state-run, English-language Press TV said the monkey was retrieved alive.
Iran announced plans in 2011 to send a monkey into space, but that attempt was reported to have failed.
Western powers are concerned that the long-range ballistic technology used to propel Iranian satellites into orbit could be used to launch nuclear warheads. Tehran denies such suggestions and says its nuclear activity is for peaceful energy only.

Jan. 28, 2013 ? UCLA researchers, in a finding that runs counter to conventional wisdom, have discovered for the first time that a gene thought to express a protein in all cells that come under stress is instead expressed only in specific cell types.
The group, from the Jules Stein Eye Institute and UCLA Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, focused on ?B-Crystallin, a small heat shock protein. Heat shock proteins are a class of functionally-related proteins involved in the folding and unfolding of other proteins. Their expression is increased when cells are exposed to taxing environmental conditions, such as infection, inflammation, exercise, exposure to toxins and other stressors.
?B-Crystallin may be associated with certain cancers and could be developed into a biomarker to monitor for diseases such as multiple sclerosis, age-related macular degeneration, heart muscle degeneration and clouding of the eye lens. Any discoveries about how this protein is regulated and its molecular biology may reveal potential targets for novel therapies, said study first author Zhe Jing, a research associate in UCLA Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
"If you use a certain cell type, this protein can be induced when the cells are stressed, but that doesn't happen in a different cell type," said Jing. "This novel finding does conflict with what has been thought, that this protein could be induced in any cell type."
The findings of this two-year study are published in the most recent issue of the journal Cell Stress and Chaperones, a peer-reviewed journal in the fields of cell stress response.
The UCLA team did the study using four cell lines -- two epithelial cells lines and two fibroblast cells lines. They found that the protein cannot be induced by stress in epithelial cells, in which 80 percent of cancers arise. It can, however, be induced in the fibroblasts that make up muscle tissue.
The significant finding in this investigation is that, in certain cell types, only one specific heat shock factor controls the expression of ?B-Crystallin. For example, in the epithelial cell lines, it is heat shock factor 4 (HSF4), while a different heat shock factor, (HSF1), plays this role in the fibroblast cells lines.
In the past, the data has indicated that a heat shock factor could control the expression of ?B-Crystallin randomly and equally. However, Jing's discovery overrides this rule. His findings strongly suggest the "preference" of the ?B-Crystallin to heat shock factors in certain cells may be correlated with its versatility to various diseases.
"Considering the multiple roles of ?B-Crystallin in so many diseases, the access of the HSF1 and HSF4 to the ?B-Crystallin gene dictated by the certain cell type may be what is helping to cause certain diseases," Jing said. "If we can uncover the cascade of events that result in disease, we may be able to come up with strategies to block or interrupt that cascade."
Going forward, Jing and the research team will validate what they found in this study by examining single cells, which provides a greater challenge but may lead to further discoveries.
The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

As expected, the Senate passed a $50.5 billion aid package on Monday evening to help rebuild areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. With the $9.7 billion increase in national flood insurance that was passed earlier this month, Sandy victims now have $60.2 billion coming to their rescue. But who exactly gets all that money? And when?
RELATED: The Big Sandy Relief Bill is Almost Here ? Finally
Well, the next stop for the Sandy relief bill itself is obviously the president's desk. Obama is expected to sign it and will probably do so with a coy grin, since he literally got over 99 percent of what he asked for. (Obama's original budget request called for $60.4 billion in aid, which is only slightly more than the $60.2 billion in aid that Congress ended up passing.) But after the ink dries, things get a little complicated.
RELATED: The Most Unbelievable but Real Pictures of Sandy's Destruction
The Sandy Aid package must be divvied up between the completely devastated communities in coastal areas of New Jersey and New York, not to mention the less devastated parts of states like Maryland, Delaware and Connecticut. From a big picture perspective, some $50 billion will go towards disaster relief, while the remainder of the money will go towards mitigation -- that is, reducing the risk of a disaster like this happening again. Think infrastructure improvements, rather than an ultra powerful weather machine built by a mad scientist. Now because the original Obama proposal went through both the media's and the Republicans' gauntlet, some got the impression that the bill was "stuffed with pork." That was, however, not the case, and the final breakdown of aid dollars doesn't look too different from Obama's original breakdown.

Based on the original breakdown, everyone from the New York City subway system to coastal New Jersey residents to the Statue of Liberty will receive relief aid. That $50 billion figure will be divided up between both national and local programs. Included is the $9.7 billion increase in National Flood Insurance which will go, in part, to help rebuild homes. Funds with similarly broad missions will receive the other major chunks. FEMA Disaster Relief Fund gets about $11 billion, and the Community Development Block Grant gets $15 billion. The various transportation agencies -- the MTA, Port Authority, NJTransit and NYC DoT, Amtrak -- get about $6.5 billion, while the Army Corp of Engineers gets $1.5 billion. Smaller sums will be awarded to?Health and Human Services, the National Parks Service, US DOT, Amtrak, Veterans Affairs and the Small Business Administration.

Mitigation spending is a bit simpler. The Federal Transit Administration takes the lion's share of the $13 million set aside for disaster prevention. The Army Corps of Engineers and Community Development Block Grant get $3.8 and $2 billion, respectively. The remaining $1.6 billion will be split up between the top federal environmental organizations, like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the?National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). If anybody has an ultra powerful weather machine built by a mad scientist, by the way, it's these guys.

It's unclear exactly who will get how much money when, but let's put it this way. The victims of Hurricane Sandy have already waited three months for help from the federal government. What harm is a few more weeks going to do?

If you are like most hopeful real estate buyers in Northern Virginia, you are probably noticing that there aren?t many nice homes out there to buy right now. Not to bore you with more real estate stats, but from Vienna to Ashburn, it?s slim pickins out there!
You are not alone. I just read an article from?Redfin?s CEO on TechCrunch about how challenging the market is in Silicon Valley ? yes, California. In fact, inventory of homes for sale at one point in December was so low that every ?agent in the San Francisco office represented a different home-buyer on that property.?
Oy, that?s a headache, and could have created a bit of an agency conflict-of-interest if one of their buyers overpaid.
Anyway, back to our nasty little situation here, and a real estate tip that may help your effort.
One item that is crucial to have in your quiver is the quality of your ?lender letter?. Yes, boring, boring, boring.
If you have never sold a home before or it has been a long time since you did, please understand there is a #1 concern of 99% of home sellers. The #1 concern: your ability to get the financing that you are telling them you are pre-approved for. From their perspective, they are taking a lot ?on faith? when they decided to select your offer over another.
So, my easy real estate tip:
For example, last fall an agent presented me an offer that included a pre-approval letter that was six months old. Since his client?s offer was very competitive, I asked him (out of professional courtesy) to get a new letter. He seemed surprised and a little embarrassed because without a ?fresh? letter his client?s offer was not going to win.
If your agent is allowing you to submit an offer from a lender dated three, four months or older, then you should be fired! Yes, you the buyer should be fired for wasting that agent?s time.
You might not completely understand that the relationships between lenders and real estate agents has changed in the post-recession, highly regulated world. Mortgage lenders now have ID numbers and your loan officer may have a handle like?NMLS ID # 510009. The consumer protection rules have changed and it is your responsibility to keep in touch with your mortgage lender. Okay?
I am not a mortgage lender or originator, but see the larger picture to help my real estate clients have a strategy to help achieve their goals in a challenging marketplace.
