The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) foreign ministers have agreed to move forward to formal talks on drafting a Code of Conduct for the South China Sea, a senior Cambodian official said yesterday.
Kao Kim Hourn, secretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, also said that Asean has tasked Thailand to coordinate with China for dialogue and that more meetings needed to be held.
The official said "all ministers" agreed on the need for "full implementation" of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, signed by Asean leaders and China in Phnom Penh in 2002.
Asean members Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam have overlapping claims with China in the South China Sea.
Kao Kim Hourn, who was speaking after a meeting of Asean foreign ministers in Phnom Penh Saturday, said there was no specific time frame for drafting the code of conduct.
