Kyrie Irving Is The NBA Live 14 Cover Athlete

22784398 480 Kyrie Irving Is The NBA Live 14 Cover Athlete

EA Sports confirmed today that Kyrie Irving ? the young, star point guard of the Cleveland Cavaliers ? will be gracing the cover of NBA Live 14. After a three year hiatus from the pro-basketball simulation scene, EA is attempting to bounce back with their answer to NBA 2k?s LeBron Jamesian basketball dominance.

NBA Live 14, the first basketball simulation from EA since NBA Live 2010, has an uphill battle ahead of it. After the briefly renamed NBA Elite 11?s abrupt cancellation, the folks at EA took an extra year off to create a quality game to rival that of their competitor?s. NBA Live 13 was supposed to be released last fall but was, once again, cancelled.

Now, Live is looking forward. This year?s instalment will be released exclusively on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Developmental diaries boast of new snappy-named technology like the Ignite Engine, which is apparently being included in all of the next generation EA Sports releases, and ?Bouncetek,? a ?physics based dribbling mechanic? promising heightened ?authenticity? and ?responsiveness? to set it apart from the other guys.

Whether these fancy new buzzwords deliver with substance, let alone enough substance to seriously compete with 2k?s dominance, remains to be seen. But the deliberate choice of Kyrie Irving is particularly poignant given who 2k chose as their cover athlete ? LeBron James.

James?s controversial exit from Cleveland in pursuit ? and attainment ? of championship rings left a rust-belt city, known more in recent years for its sports short-comings than achievements, angry and desperate. In steps Kyrie Irving, the 2011 first overall draft pick who?s gone on to become a league-wide superstar and the face of a franchise once thought dead. The Cavs are now on the upswing. Their rebuilding process, while not quite complete, has given their fans a substantial reason for hope.

As EA?s Live moves back into the competitive fold, choosing a young star player on the rise as their cover athlete is appropriate. Choosing this particular one, the guy who?s meant to replace LeBron, is bold. Only time will tell if they can succeed. One thing?s for sure, the renewed rivalry for virtual basketball supremacy is centered around Cleveland, Ohio ? and that is very, very strange.

NBA Live 14 is out later this year.

In this image taken from Egypt State TV, Egyptian Defense Minister Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi delivers a speech in Cairo, Egypt, Wednesday, July 24, 2013. El-Sissi has called on Egyptians to hold mass demonstrations to voice their support for the military to put an end to "violence" and "terrorism." (AP Photo/Egypt State TV)

(AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood's leader on Thursday made an unusually harsh attack on Egypt's military chief, saying his ouster of President Mohammed Morsi was a worse crime than even destroying the Kaaba, Islam's holiest shrine.

Mohammed Badie's comment, which came in his weekly message to followers, underlined the anger felt by Islamists over the July 3 coup by Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, which followed mass protests by millions demanding that Morsi step down. Morsi is a veteran figure from the Brotherhood.

His analogy between the coup and destroying the Kaaba takes to a new level the enmity between the camp of Islamists led by the Brotherhood and their opponents, including liberals, moderate Muslim and secular Egyptians and minority Christians.

It also appears designed to whip up religious sentiments against el-Sissi on the eve of mass rallies that the general called for as a show of support for planned action by the military and the police to stop "violence and terrorism" by Morsi's supporters.

Islamists are holding their own rallies on Friday as well, part of their campaign to reinstate Morsi to office.

Badie, who has an arrest warrant against him for allegedly inciting violence, also called el-Sissi a "traitor" and urged him to repent.

"I swear by God that what el-Sissi did in Egypt is more criminal than if he had carried an axe and demolished the holy Kaaba stone by stone," said Badie, who also called on followers to take out to the streets on Friday, raising the specter of violence between the two camps.

The Kaaba is the cube-shaped shrine in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, that Muslims around the world face in their daily prayers.

Morsi's supporters have been staging sit-ins in two locations in Cairo since before Morsi's July 3 ouster. There have been deadly clashes between them and opponents of the ousted leader in the Egyptian capital and elsewhere as well as a dramatic rise in attacks blamed on radical Islamists in the strategic Sinai Peninsula.

Close to 200 people have been killed in the latest wave of violence to roil Egypt since the ouster in Feb. 2011 of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt's highest security body, the National Defense Council, issued a statement on Thursday saying authorities were committed to ensuring the safety of all peaceful protesters, but warned that no tolerance would be shown to anyone who threatens security. It also pledged that authorities would stay within the law and the boundaries of human rights when measures are taken to end the "terrorizing of citizens and breaking the law."

The statement, issued after the council met late Wednesday, sought to reassure Egyptians that el-Sissi's call for rallies was not a bid to secure a popular cover for extrajudicial measures or gross human rights violations against Islamists. The council is currently led by interim President Adly Mansour and includes the prime minister and the defense and interior ministers.

Pro-democracy activists have since el-Sissi's call for rallies recalled the human rights abuses, including torturing detainees, blamed on the military during its direct rule for nearly 17 months after Mubarak's ouster.

"I hope that the voice of the people tomorrow will be loud and resounding, but also peaceful," interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi told reporters on Thursday. Clearly addressing the secular and liberal camp, he said: "Whoever wants to reassert the civilian state must come out in force."

El-Beblawi also commended el-Sissi's call for the rallies, calling the general a "cornerstone in the defense of the civilian state."

"Tomorrow is the day for the expression of views, freely and responsibly. Whoever tries to spoil the party will be dealt with firmly," he said.

OKC Downtown Airpark opens tonight with Sublime with Rome in concert

Sublime with Rome will open the debut season at Oklahoma City's new outdoor concert venue, the OKC Downtown Airpark.

Sublime with Rome will open the debut season at Oklahoma City's new outdoor concert venue, the OKC Downtown Airpark.

Oklahoma City?s newest outdoor venue is opening tonight with an effort to bring a little free music to tornado victims and first responders.

Ska punk band Sublime with Rome is bringing its headlining tour to the new OKC Downtown Airpark, 1701 S Western Ave., at 4:30 p.m. today. Gates open at 3 p.m.

The lineup for the venue?s first show also will include Pennywise, TWIZTID, Kottonmouth Kings and HB Surround Sound.

Tickets are $30, $40 and $55. But a limited number of free tickets has been set aside for first responders and victims of the May tornadoes, said Downtown Airpark President Howard Pollack.

?We want to help lift their spirits,? Pollack said. ?We want to give them a day of respite just to get away from the madness and enjoy the music.?

Free tickets can be picked up at the Moore Chamber of Commerce, 305 W Main Street in Moore, and KIRC radio station, 2 E Main in Shawnee, he said. First responders, including police officers, firefighters, military personnel and National Guard members, will be asked to show identification, while tornado victims will need to show their FEMA cards.

The airpark will feature an 80-foot-by-60-foot stage, a 30,000-square-foot entrance tent, two domed tents, a shaded VIP deck with a second stage, water and cooling stations and concession areas, he said. Along with the cooling breezes from the river, the venue will have a great view of the Oklahoma City skyline.

Along with tonight?s Sublime with Rome show, the venue?s first season lineup includes Motley Crue, Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington and Oklahoma City rockers Hinder in concert on Sept. 13 and The Lumineers with Dr. Dog and Nathaniel Rateliffon on Oct. 3. A Latin Music Festival also is planned for fall, he said.

?We?re going to be adding some new shows in September and October, and without giving anything away, they?re going to be incredible shows,? said Pollack, who operated the Zoo Amphitheatre for many years.

?The most important thing is that we?re going to have a lot of fun.?

For tickets and information, go to www.facebook.com/OKCAirpark or www.ticketstorm.com.

Strong iPhone sales buoy Apple's third-quarter, shares climb

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc's quarterly revenue and earnings beat Wall Street's targets on surprisingly strong sales of its flagship iPhone, sending its shares up 4 percent.

But profit slid 22 percent in its fiscal third quarter as margins were pressured by growing competition and a wider array of lower-end devices such as older smartphones.

Apple earned $6.9 billion, or $7.47 a share, on revenue of $35.3 billion. That compared with a profit of $8.8 billion, or $9.32 a share, on revenue of about $35 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Wall Street's average forecast was for revenue of $35.02 billion and earnings per share of $7.32, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Iowa Could Pose Problem For GOP Outreach

While the GOP autopsy on the 2012 election talks explicitly about reaching out to women and minorities to expand the party, it does not get into detail about its Iowa problem. Specifically, the state GOP that begins the presidential nominating season is dominated by religious conservatives most resistant to a broader, more inclusive party message.

Voters shifting right force House GOP to keep pace

Click photo to enlarge

FILE - In this July 17, 2013, file photo, Rep. Tim Griffin, R-Ark., center, and Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., right, chairman of the House Education Committee, walk to the floor of the House of Representatives for a vote to delay the individual and employer mandates of President Barack Obama's signature health care law, at the Capitol in Washington. It's the 38th time the GOP majority has tried to eliminate, defund or scale back the program since Republicans took control of the House in January 2011. House Republicans feel growing pressure to steer firmly right on some big issues, thanks to changes in primary-election politics that are complicating Congress' ability to solve big problems.

WASHINGTON?House Republicans feel growing pressure to steer firmly right on key issues, thanks to changes in primary-election politics that are complicating Congress' ability to solve big problems.

Independent research supports the belief by these lawmakers that they owe their jobs to increasingly conservative activists, and that it's safer than ever to veer right on many subjects rather than seek compromise with Democrats.

On the flip side, House Democrats face a more liberal-leaning electorate in their own primary elections. But the trend is less dramatic for Democrats, whose supporters are more open to compromise to help government work, polls show. And Republican control of the House makes the GOP dynamic more consequential.

The House's recent struggles to handle once-routine tasks?such as passing a bipartisan farm bill and raising the federal debt limit?partly stem from the millions of Republican primary voters who elect representatives with stern warnings not to compromise with Democrats. It's also a reason that efforts to rewrite the nation's immigration laws face problems in the House, where Republicans quickly dismissed the Senate's bipartisan approach.

In interviews, House Republicans often cite worries about a possible challenge from the right in their next primary. Many of them represent districts so strongly Republican that it's all but impossible for the party's nominee to lose a general election to a Democrat. Also, these lawmakers say, it's highly unlikely that a moderate Republican can wrest the party's nomination from a conservative incumbent.

"There aren't a whole lot of moderate Republicans who participate in the primary in a conservative district," said Rep. Kenny Marchant, R-Texas.

That leaves many House Republicans with only one prerequisite to assure their re-election: Never give a hard-charging conservative enough room on the right to mount a viable challenge in the primary.

In practice, the task doesn't seem so hard. Only six House Republicans lost their re-election primaries last year. Half of them fell to fellow incumbents in redrawn districts that forced two colleagues to oppose each other. The other three lost to challengers with strong tea party support.

Rep. Jean Schmidt's loss was instructive. A conservative by almost any measure, the three-term Ohioan was attacked nonetheless for voting to raise the federal debt ceiling and for giving President Barack Obama a peck on the cheek as he entered the House for his 2012 State of the Union address.

Memories of what happened to Schmidt?and to veteran Republican senators such as Bob Bennett and Richard Lugar, who also lost primaries to tea party-backed challengers?come up repeatedly in political discussions, House insiders say. GOP lawmakers regularly take the temperature of their districts' conservative activists, who are crucial in primary elections, which often draw modest turnouts.

"House members are better at reading their districts than anyone else," said Republican lobbyist and pollster Mike McKenna.

McKenna said it's not unusual to discuss immigration reform with House Republicans who say, "I'm getting emails from people who vote in primaries. They say 'I don't care what the Farm Bureau says, I hate this stuff.'"

Rep. John Fleming, R-La., tracks such emails and phone calls. He said his office recently received 80 calls about immigration, "and all of them were against the Senate bill."

The Senate bill would create a pathway to citizenship?or what many conservatives call "amnesty"?for millions of immigrants living here illegally. Fleming, asked whether he ever worries about going too far right for GOP primary voters in his district, said: "What's the chance of a moderate Republican coming in and saying, 'Oh, I'm for amnesty'?"

Marchant, the Texas congressman, said he's a lifelong conservative who has watched GOP primary voters in his west-Dallas district lean increasingly to the right. Tea partyers who once cast their votes for Libertarian Party candidates, he said, now are full-fledged Republicans.

"The mainstream Republicans, as a result, have become more conservative," Marchant said. Tea party activists, he said, "found that they could go into the Republican primary and make a real difference."

GOP Rep. Howard Coble, elected to 15 terms from central North Carolina, dates the change in primary voters' behavior to the mid-1990s. Conservative groups, he said, "were challenging Bob Dole for not being pure enough."

"That has opened the gates to primary races" against Republican incumbents, Coble said.

Voter surveys support the view that Republican voters are becoming more conservative.

On average, from 1976 through 1990, 47 percent of people who voted Republican in House races considered themselves conservative, according to exit polls. A slightly smaller share called themselves political moderates.

During Bill Clinton's presidency?which included bruising fights over health care, gun control, taxes and his impeachment?Republicans' conservatism began rising. From 1992 through 2006, GOP voters were 52 percent conservative on average and 41 percent moderate.

And in the most recent House elections, 2008 through 2012, more than 6 in 10 voters who backed a GOP candidate described themselves as conservative. About a third called themselves moderate.

Meanwhile, those who vote for House Democrats have become more liberal. But self-described liberals still comprise less than half of that group. In the pre-Clinton years, 25 percent considered themselves liberal; 33 percent on average did so from 1992 to 2006; and it stands at 40 percent across the last three elections.

Michael Dimock, who tracks such trends for the Pew Research Center, said that several years ago there was a notable difference between social conservatives and business conservatives in the Republican Party. Today, he said, Republican voters are more unified?and solidly conservative.

"The socially conservative right has adopted that anti-government, small-government principle, and it's largely consolidated," Dimock said.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, put a positive spin Sunday on what many see as congressional gridlock.

"We should not be judged by how many new laws we create," Boehner told CBS's "Face the Nation." "We ought to be judged on how many laws we repeal."

LEGION BASEBALL: Hingham is swinging for another title

?It seems like forever ago when the Hingham High baseball team made a historic run through the Div. 2 tournament en route to a state title.

As distant as the memory might seem, the Hingham players are poised to make another tournament run about two months later.

This time, however, its the Hingham Post 120 baseball team taking aim at another state crown when the American Legion playoffs begin this week.

Hingham (16-6) finished in a four-way tie for first place in the Zone 10 standings with Brockton, Plymouth and Kingston. Hingham was awarded the No. 3 seed and will face Hawkeye Athletic Club in the best-of-three first round of the playoffs. Game 1 is set for 5 p.m. today at Cronin Field in Hingham.

?We beat them by the mercy rule the only time we played them this year,? said Hingham coach Vin Murray, ?but that was a long time ago and I know that they didn?t throw their best pitcher against us.?

?They have a very good program and we?ve played them a lot in the playoffs and it always comes down to a Game 3.?

Hingham is littered with players who were state champions on the Hingham High team, but three of its main contributors ? Sean Greene, Kevin Minassian and Robbie Madden ? are all college freshmen and missed out on the tournament run.

?Those three were so anxious to start the season,? Murray said. ?They?re so hyped.?

?They missed out on the title run by one year so they?re treating the Legion season as the be-all end-all. This is their chance.?

Greene has been the ace of the Hingham staff this summer and will get the ball in Game 1 against Hawkeye.

Because Hingham High made such a late run in the tournament, the Hingham Legion team was forced to play 22 games in 31 days to make up for the delayed start.

?We played a lot of games in a short time,? Murray said. ?We had some double-headers and played on back-to-back days a lot. We?ve had a lot of guys that couldn?t make some games, so we?re really just getting to full strength.?

No. 2 seed Plymouth will play seventh-seeded Wareham, with No. 4 Kingston squaring off against No. 5 Orleans. No. 8 Marshfield draws top-seeded Brockton.

Ledgerland is also represented in Zone 6 with Braintree (19-5), Milton (14-10), Canton (13-11) and Morrisette (13-11) all earning playoff bids.

Morrisette seemed like it was headed for the No. 3 seed before some sloppy play in the final week of the season dropped them to the No. 5 spot, pairing them with the West Division?s top team in Franklin (20-4).

?We played Franklin two years ago in the playoffs and the roles were reversed. We were the top seed.? Morrisette coach Steve Maze said. ?They had some really good players that are still there so it?s going to be an uphill battle.?

Morrisette will throw Tom Garland in Game 1 against Franklin, as they hope to return to midseason form.

?We weren?t playing well at all a week ago,? said Maze. ?We had a playoff spot locked up and I think we just kind of coasted. Hopefully we can flip the switch.?

All Zone 6 games will be held Tuesday, with Braintree hosting Medfield at 7 p.m. at Braintree High School. Milton, Canton and Quincy will have home playoff games Wednesday.

One Direction: Harry Styles says ?Despite the company outside, I believe in equal rights for everyone. I think God loves all? as Westboro Baptist Church picket Kansas gig!

July 20th, 2013 by Lynn Connolly.

harry styles, wbc

Just a few hours ago ? which would have been around 2am our time today ? One Direction star Harry Styles took to Twitter to comment on the fact that followers of nutty cult Westboro Baptist Church were picketing at 1D?s live gig in the Sprint Center in Kansas City?

His message read, ?Despite the company outside, I believe in equal rights for everyone. I think God loves all. Thanks for coming to the show though.?

As fans of 1D will most likely know, the extremist followers of WBC have branded 1D ?freaks? and ?crotch-grabbing little perverts.?

In a recent statement that they entitled ?God hates fag enablers,? WBC said it believes 1D are ?a perfect representation of this filthy world and the sin-chasing, fag-enabling, Christ-rejecting UK who has banned WBC from preaching within her borders.?

The statement continued, ?These freaks and their fans think it?s funny for these five perverts to grab each other?s asses on stage.

?They glamorise sin and mock of God?s standards. Their one purpose is to encourage the youth of this generation to pursue every lust their evil hearts can imagine.?

Earlier this month, the Independent reported, ?In an effort to spread its message, Westboro Baptist Church has created a parody of One Direction?s number one single ?One Thing?.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church from Topeka Kansas demonstrate against homosexuality

?The evangelical group?s rendition starts: ?We?ll be playing it cool/ When God?s wrath is on you/ None of you will be brave/ When god ends this human race?.?

They group have also vowed to picket one of Taylor Swift?s live gigs in August, and said of her, ?She works her ?girl next door? country-singer shtick, while hopping from one young man to the next and strutting across the world stage like a proud whore.?

The evangelical extremist group was the focus of a Louis Theroux?s documentary in 2007 that was entitled, The Most Hated Family in America. In it, Theroux interviewed the church?s leader Fred Phelps, who spawned the group?s slogan ?God hates fags.?

However, Harry didn?t let the horrible debacle get him down for long, and added on Twitter ?God 8 a sandwich? before posting, ?Looking forward to the show tonight?

?Kansas City we?ll be with you in about 3 minutes .xx?

The WBC really are sickening aren?t they?! Here?s a recent news report about the cult?

Beatnik Bar and Restaurant opens with great deals for Artscape ...

beatnik2I saw the best minds of my generation wandering through the angry streets at 10 P.M. looking for a drink and a bite to eat. Now all the angel-headed hipsters have another place to hang.

We noted in this week?s Comings & Goings that the Beatnik Bar and Restaurant (2101 Maryland Ave., [410] ?400-0022, facebook.com/bmorebeatnik) has opened up beside Club K. As we were making our pre-Artscape rounds last night (Thursday night is actually the best night of Artscape as artists frantically try to get their shit set up), we decided to stop in for a cold one, and let me tell you, for a place which just opened its doors and is called Beatnik, they had their shit massively together.

First, it?s a surprisingly cool looking (and cool, at least last night) space that a companion described as ?downstairs Brewer?s Art mixed with W.C. Harlans.? That?s not a bad initial descriptor but it has more of a gritty downtown feel than either of those joints, in a good way.

There are a few different beers on tap and an impressive lists of cocktails. In the cheap beer category, they decided to do something other than Boh and Yuengling and settled on Heinnieweisse, a New York beer that tastes a lot like Genesee, and Session (during Artscape both are only $2 each from 6-10 P.M.?a hard deal to beat).

?We wanted it to be a bar in the neighborhood that is not a venue, where you can just hang out,? Grant Shprintz, one of the managers said. And it is that kind of place. There are half a dozen seats at the bar, a couple loveseats by the door, and a back room with a few tables. Conversation came easy and patrons at the bar discussed food and drinks with one another. They?ve got a jukebox, but at the moment there are no cards, so it would be like playing Russian Roulette with your quarters. Shrpintz says that Friends records is going to supply their whole catalog and they plan to fill it up with a lot of other local music.

photo(15)After a couple Heinnieweisse, we decided to try the food. We normally give restaurants a couple weeks before we review them, so this is not a review (besides, these are the guys who run Bohemian and I?ve written about art there and they recognized me when I walked in, so I wouldn?t be a fair reviewer, but I was hungry). And, in a non-formal review kind of way, I have to say the food was fucking incredible. The pork belly tacos with kimchi and a fresh cucumber on house made tortillas were the perfect snack, with the right balance of crisp, smooth, heat and cool. The lychee fruit was a great palate cleanser (and yo, Chris La Martina, if you need it to look like somebody?s eating eyeballs in one of your flicks, lychee is the fruit for you!). There were also chicken wings, but my drinking buddy got to those before I ever got to try them. Which was a fair enough trade for me, because that meant I got the sublime quail egg. They also have chicken feet.

During Artscape all individual plates of food are $4 and the the chef?s plate, which contained all of the above, which is normally $12 will be discounted. Chef Jerry Mac can make the chef?s plate to order?if you want it all vegetarian, he can do it up for you, for instance (and everything is gluten free)?but it?s best to let him bring you what he?s feeling. At least that worked for us.

Beatnik is a serious place and in a perfect location as Station North begins to extend up towards Remington and Charles Village. It?s likely where we?ll be spending a lot of our Artscape downtime.

Amid lawsuit, NCAA will end association with football video game

EA-USA-Today-sports-18-1307171659_4_3

The NCAA will no longer allow Electronic Arts Inc. to use its logo and name in video games.

The NCAA announced Wednesday it will not enter into a new contract with EA Sports and ?NCAA Football 2014? will be the last edition of the popular game.

The move comes as the NCAA fights a lawsuit that demands the NCAA find a way to cut players in on the billions of dollars earned by from live broadcasts, memorabilia sales, video games and in other areas.

The NCAA said in a statement it is confident in its legal position regarding the use of trademarks in video games, but

?we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA.?

Russian opposition leader sentenced to 5 years

KIROV, Russia (AP) ? Russian opposition leader and Moscow mayoral candidate Alexei Navalny was convicted of embezzlement Thursday and sentenced to five years in prison, a harsh ruling his supporters called an obvious attempt to shut down a foe of President Vladimir Putin and intimidate other opposition activists.

In a surprise move, prosecutors later asked that he be kept free pending appeal, possibly reflecting an attempt to soothe public anger and to lend legitimacy to a mayoral race expected to be won by a Kremlin-backed politician.

Navalny, who rose to fame as an anti-corruption blogger before leading unprecedented protests that revealed the depths of anger against the Kremlin, was found guilty of heading a group that embezzled 16 million rubles ($500,000) worth of timber from a state-owned company in 2009.

Backers say he is innocent, calling the trial unfair and the evidence against him shoddy. The U.S. and EU both criticized the ruling within hours, arguing that the case appeared to be politically motivated.

Navalny had expected the ruling and protests were planned even before it was handed down, setting up a potential confrontation with police, who routinely crack down harshly on unsanctioned rallies. By early evening, several hundred protesters gathered outside Red Square, shouting "Freedom!" amid thick police cordons. Police detained some of the demonstrators, but didn't immediately move to disperse the rally.

In court, the 37-year-old lawyer played with his smartphone for much of the nearly 3 ?-hour verdict reading. A post on his Twitter account after the sentence was announced appeared to encourage supporters to continue his work: "Oh, well. Don't get bored without me. And, importantly, don't be idle."

Navalny handed the phone and his watch to his wife, Yulia, before bailiffs took custody of him and a co-defendant Pyotr Ofitserov, who was given a four-year sentence.

A leading face of the opposition, Navalny was a top leader of the wave of massive protest rallies that broke out in late 2011 after a national parliamentary election scarred by allegations of widespread fraud.

He first called the dominant United Russia party "the party of crooks and thieves," a phrase that became a rallying cry for the nascent opposition to Putin. But the ruling comes as the opposition suffers under a wave of Kremlin attempts to snuff it out, including shutting down NGOs and prosecuting protesters.

Navalny had declared himself a candidate for this fall's Moscow mayoral election, but his chief of staff, Leonid Volkov, told The Associated Press they agreed he would drop out of the race if he was sentenced to prison.

It was not immediately clear if Navalny would stay in the race after prosecutors' request that he be freed. The Kremlin may think that his popularity isn't broad enough to pose an electoral threat to the incumbent.

Thursday's court ruling sparked condemnation from the outspoken U.S. Ambassador Michael McFaul.

"We are deeply disappointed in the conviction of Alexei Navalny and Pyotr Ofitservov and the apparent political motivations in this trial," he wrote on Facebook.

Catherine Ashton, foreign policy chief for the European Union, said she was concerned about the conviction and sentence, saying in a statement that the charges had not been substantiated during the trial.

"This outcome, given the procedural shortcomings, raises serious questions as to the state of the rule of law in Russia," she said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said that "five years in prison seems disproportionately high, even against the background of the crime he was accused of." Seibert added there were grounds for "doubts as to whether motives of criminal law were in the foreground at this trial."

Russian news reports said Navalny was taken to a detention facility in Kirov immediately after the verdict. Several dozen Navalny supporters gathered outside the facility soon after the sentencing.

Navalny's wife appeared composed after seeing her husband taken away in handcuffs, saying, "If someone hopes that Alexei's investigations will cease, that's wrong."

The Russian stock market, sensitive to politically charged issues, dove within minutes of the verdict, with the main MICEX index dropping 1.4 percent before partly recovering.

The case stems from when Navalny worked as an unpaid adviser to the provincial governor in Kirov, about 760 kilometers (470 miles) east of Moscow. Prosecutors say he was part of a group that embezzled 16 million rubles' ($500,000) worth of timber from state-owned company Kirovles.

The defense argued that Ofitserov's company bought the timber from Kirovles for 14 million rubles and sold it on for 16 million rubles in a regular commercial deal. Navalny's lawyers presented invoices proving the transactions.

The judge said he found the testimony of key prosecution witness Vyacheslav Opalev to be "trustworthy and consistent." Opalev, who was the timber company's general director, got a suspended sentence in an expedited trial in December after pleading guilty to conspiring with Navalny.

Navalny insists Opalev framed him out of revenge: Navalny had recommended that Opalev be fired and that officials investigate potential corruption in his company, which had incurred 200 million rubles ($6 million) in losses by the time Navalny arrived in the region.

Throughout the trial, the testimony of prosecution witnesses clashed with the core arguments of the indictment that claimed Navalny's work in Kirov led to the embezzlement. None of the managers at Kirovles who appeared in court, except for Opalev, was able to confirm that Navalny defrauded the company.

Navalny had long said he expected to be convicted, and in a final blog post before leaving Moscow for Kirov, he downplayed his personal importance to the wider opposition.

"The most important thing is to muster up the strength, shake off laziness and do something. This doesn't require any leadership as such," he wrote.
