One year passes since brutal death of Armenian military physician

YEREVAN. ? Saturday, June 29, 2013 marks the one-year anniversary of the death of military doctor Vahe Avetyan.?

On this occasion, a candlelight vigil is scheduled to be held nearby the restaurant complex where he was brutally beaten.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am informed earlier, an incident had occurred at Armenian capital city Yerevan?s Harsnaqar Restaurant Complex on June 17, 2012. Several military doctors, including Edgar Mikoyan, Arkadi Aghajanyan, Garik Soghomonyan, Artak Bayadyan and Vahe Avetyan, were brutally beaten by Harsnaqar security personnel, and Avetyan, 35, died in hospital on June 29.

Subsequently, a criminal lawsuit was filed into this incident, and six people stand trial.

The Restaurant?s owner is ruling Republican Party former MP, Football Federation of Armenia President, and businessman Ruben Hayrapetyan, who formally gave up his parliamentary seat in connection with this incident. But as per Avetyan?s relatives and the active civil society, Hayrapetyan himself should be brought to account for the killing of the military officer.

A Father's Genetic Quest Pays Off

Hugh Rienhoff and daughter

Hugh Rienhoff prepared his daughter?s DNA for sequencing at home using second-hand equipment. Image: Colston Rienhoff

  • Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way...

Hugh Rienhoff says that his nine-year-old daughter, Bea, is ?a fire cracker?, ?a tomboy? and ?a very sassy, impudent girl?. But in a forthcoming research paper, he uses rather different terms, describing her hypertelorism (wide spacing between the eyes) and bifid uvula (a cleft in the tissue that hangs from the back of the palate). Both are probably features of a genetic syndrome that Rienhoff has obsessed over since soon after Bea?s birth in 2003. Unable to put on much muscle mass, Bea wears braces on her skinny legs to steady her on her curled feet. She is otherwise healthy, but Rienhoff has long worried that his daughter?s condition might come with serious heart problems.

Rienhoff, a biotech entrepreneur in San Carlos, California, who had trained as a clinical geneticist in the 1980s, went from doctor to doctor looking for a diagnosis. He bought lab equipment so that he could study his daughter?s DNA himself ? and in the process, he became a symbol for the do-it-yourself biology movement, and a trailblazer in using DNA technologies to diagnose a rare disease (see Nature 449, 773?776; 2007).

?Talk about personal genomics,? says Gary?Schroth, a research and development director at the genome-sequencing company Illumina in San Diego, California, who has helped Rienhoff in his search for clues. ?It doesn?t get any more personal than trying to figure out what?s wrong with your own kid.?

Now nearly a decade into his quest, Rienhoff has arrived at an answer. Through the partial-genome sequencing of his entire family, he and a group of collaborators have found a mutation in the gene that encodes transforming growth factor-?3 (TGF-?3). Genes in the TGF-? pathway control embryogenesis, cell differentiation and cell death, and mutations in several related genes have been associated with Marfan syndrome and Loeys?Dietz syndrome, both of which have symptomatic overlap with Bea?s condition. The mutation, which has not been connected to any disease before, seems to be responsible for Bea?s clinical features, according to a paper to be published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics.

Hal Dietz, a clinician at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, where Rienhoff trained as a geneticist, isn?t surprised that the genetic culprit is in this pathway. ?The overwhelming early hypothesis was that this was related,? says Dietz, who co-discovered Loeys?Dietz syndrome in 2005.

Rienhoff had long been tapping experts such as Dietz for assistance. In 2005, an examination at Johns Hopkins revealed Bea?s bifid uvula. This feature, combined with others, suggested Loeys?Dietz syndrome, which is caused by mutations in TGF-? receptors. But physicians found none of the known mutations after sequencing these genes individually. This was a relief: Loeys?Dietz is associated with devastating cardiovascular complications and an average life span of 26 years.

In 2008, Jay Flatley, chief executive of Illumina, offered Rienhoff the chance to sequence Bea?s transcriptome ? all of the RNA expressed by a sample of her cells ? along with those of her parents and her two brothers. After drilling into the data, Rienhoff and his collaborators found that Bea had inherited from each parent a defective-looking copy of CPNE1, a poorly studied gene that seems to encode a membrane protein. It looked like the answer.

But questions remained. The gene did not have obvious connections to Bea?s features, and publicly available genome data suggests that the CPNE1 mutations are present in about 1?in?1,000?people ? an indication that there should be many more people like Bea.

WSJ: Google Is Building An Android Game Console And Smartwatch

Google may be working on an Android-based game console, smartwatch, and an updated version of the Nexus Q, if reports are to be believed. According to the Wall Street Journal (paywall), the Mountain View-based company is looking to develop these products as a means to combat anything Apple has been rumored to produce.

All of these devices are said to be produced in-house and is most likely an attempt by Google to really build a strong gaming ecosystem around its Android operating system. According to a recent study by the research firm IDC, Android powers 75 percent of all smartphones and 56.5 percent of all tablets. At this year?s Google I/O developer conference, the company revealed that there were 900 million total Android activations.

The creation of a Google game console would certainly shake up the existing Android gaming industry. Popular existing systems include Ouya and Shield. Ouya launched in stores this week and sold out within one day from major retailers.

As for the smartwatch, an Android-powered one is certainly in spite of the rumors Apple is looking to launch one soon. However, should one be created, Pebble would be one of the main companies affected by this.

Screen Shot 2013 06 27 at 3.21.08 PM Google is reportedly developing an Android game console, smartwatch, and new Nexus Q

While two of the products may appear to be proactive approaches for Google, the Nexus Q is actually an interesting mention. It was revealed in 2012 at the company?s developer conference, but what exactly does it do? According to its Google Play page, the Nexus Q is billed as a ?social streaming media player? and comes with 16 GB of onboard storage and is priced at $300.

The Nexus Q was given out to developers, but hasn?t been released to the public.

We?ve reached out to Google for comment and will update this if we hear back.

Update: We?ve received a response from Google and a company spokesperson declined to comment. This post has also been updated with recent Android installs ? we referenced 2012 data instead of 2013.

Commerce Commission Rejects Labour's Chorus Broadband ... - Stuff

The Commerce Commission has rejected Labour's concerns that a failed industry effort to broker a deal over the price Chorus could charge for copper broadband amounted to collusion.

It was reported last month that major telecommunications companies had suggested Chorus should be allowed to charge just under $14 a month each for its 1 million wholesale broadband connections, but that Chorus had rejected the compromise. ?

Labour communications spokeswoman Clare Curran said a letter she had received from Commerce Commission chairman Mark Berry confirmed the nature of the negotiations.

"What really concerns me is [Communications Minister Amy Adams] was fully complicit," she said.

Berry said the commission understood that telecommunications companies had had discussions about the wholesale price of copper broadband and was "currently confirming our understanding of the situation".

But he said the commission did not believe the talks breached the Commerce Act, since pricing was regulated and the discussions were "limited to encouraging the Minister for Communications and Information Technology to legislate for a different regulated [wholesale broadband] price".

"As such, telecommunications companies cannot themselves fix, control or maintain the regulated ... price," he said.

The talks were brokered by the Telecommunications Forum and Adams was kept abreast. She had made it clear that had a final industry agreement been reached, it would then have been put out broadly for consultation.

Curran wrote to the commission asking it to investigate and to take action, saying there was ?"serious concern that collusion may have occurred between telecommunication

companies in order to determine a price that may have been acceptable to Chorus".

"This is a fundamental issue which cuts to the heart of price fixing behaviour for which the

Commerce Commission was established to prevent," she said.

Even though no deal was done, Curran said the issue mattered because the talks were an attempt to bypass the Commerce Commission. She questioned how consumers' interests would have been represented.

Berry promised her a "more fulsome reply once we have confirmed our understanding of the situation".

Since the commission recommended a regulated price of less than $9 in a draft document and ultrafast broadband is not expected to fully replace copper for two decades, the rejection of the attempted industry compromise amounted to a billion-dollar gamble by Chorus.

South Africa: Emotion builds over Mandela

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africans were torn on Wednesday between the desire not to lose a critically ill Nelson Mandela, who defined the aspirations of so many of his compatriots, and resignation that the beloved former prisoner and president is approaching the end of his life.

The sense of anticipation and foreboding about 94-year-old Mandela's fate has grown since late Sunday, when the South African government declared that the condition of the statesman, who was rushed to a hospital in Pretoria on June 8, had deteriorated.

A tide of emotional tributes has built on social media and in hand-written messages and flowers laid outside the hospital and Mandela's home. On Wednesday, about 20 children from a day care center posted a hand-made card outside the hospital and recited a poem.

"Hold on, old man," was one of the lines in the Zulu poem, according to the South African Press Association.

In recent days, international leaders, celebrities, athletes and others have praised Mandela, not just as the man who steered South Africa through its tense transition from white racist rule to democracy two decades ago, but as a universal symbol of sacrifice and reconciliation.

In South Africa's Eastern Cape province, where Mandela grew up, a traditional leader said the time was near for Mandela, who is also known by his clan name, Madiba.

"I am of the view that if Madiba is no longer enjoying life, and is on life support systems, and is not appreciating what is happening around him, I think the good Lord should take the decision to put him out of his suffering," said the tribal chief, Phathekile Holomisa.

"I did speak to two of his family members, and of course, they are in a lot of pain, and wish that a miracle might happen, that he recovers again, and he becomes his old self again," he said. "But at the same time they are aware there is a limit what miracles you can have."

For many South Africans, Mandela's decline is a far more personal matter, echoing the protracted and emotionally draining process of losing one of their own elderly relatives.

One nugget of wisdom about the arc of life and death came from Matthew Rusznyah, a 9-year-old boy who stopped outside Mandela's home in the Johannesburg neighborhood of Houghton to show his appreciation.

"We came because we care about Mandela being sick, and we wish we could put a stop to it, like snap our fingers," he said. "But we can't. It's how life works."

His mother, Lee Rusznyah, said Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison under apartheid before becoming South Africa's first black president in all-race elections in 1994, had made the world a better place.

On Tuesday, a South African archbishop who visited Mandela offered a prayer in which he wished for a "peaceful, perfect, end" for the anti-apartheid leader, who was taken to the Pretoria hospital to be treated for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.

In the prayer, Thabo Makgoba, the Anglican archbishop of Cape Town, asked for courage to be granted to Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, and others who love him "at this hard time of watching and waiting," and he appealed for divine help for the medical team treating Mandela.

"May your blessing rest upon Madiba now and always," Makgoba said in the prayer. "Grant him, we pray, a quiet night and a peaceful, perfect, end."

He wished that Mandela would be granted relief from pain and suffering, and also said: "Uphold all of us with your steadfast love so that we may be filled with gratitude for all the good that he has done for us and for our nation, and may honor his legacy through our lives."

Visitors to the hospital on Wednesday included Mandela's former wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. The couple divorced in 1996.

Mandela, whose 95th birthday is on July 18, served a single five-year term as president and afterward focused on charitable causes, but he withdrew from public life years ago and became increasingly frail in recent years. He last made a public appearance in 2010 at the World Cup soccer tournament, which was hosted by South Africa. At that time, he did not speak to the crowd and was bundled against the cold in a stadium full of fans.

On April 29, state television broadcast footage of a visit by President Jacob Zuma and other leaders of the ruling party, the African National Congress, to Mandela's home. Zuma said at the time that Mandela was in good shape, but the footage ? the first public images of Mandela in nearly a year ? showed him silent and unresponsive, even when Zuma tried to hold his hand.

Before the weekend announcement that Mandela was in critical condition, the South African government, former leader Thabo Mbeki and at least two members of Mandela's family had said his health was improving. The divergence between such upbeat reports and what appears to be a more dire reality has contributed to a sense of uncertainty, even as the government says the privacy of Mandela and his family must be respected.

"Let's accept instead of crying," said Lucas Aedwaba, a security officer in Pretoria who described Mandela as a hero. "Let's celebrate that the old man lived and left his legacy."

Dan Lehman, an American academic, chose a jogging route on Wednesday morning that passed by the hospital where Mandela is being treated.

"I was just going out for my morning run down here and come to pay my respects to the greatest man in the world," Lehman said. Then he began to cry.

Stocks gain on encouraging news about the economy

(AP) ? Better news on jobs and consumer spending pushed stocks higher Thursday.

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for a third straight day. Bond yields fell for a second day, easing worries that a sudden spike in interest rates could hurt the economy.

Consumer spending rose 0.3 percent last month as incomes increased at the fastest pace in three months, the government reported. The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell 9,000 to 346,000 last week. The report added to evidence that the job market is improving modestly.

Stocks have rallied since Tuesday as investors took advantage of lower prices after a sell-off that lasted till Monday. The plunge came after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said that the central bank could cut back on its stimulus later this year and possibly end it next year, if the economy continued to improve.

The Dow sank 560 points over Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Even with the gains this week the index is still 293 points below where it was June 18, the day before the Fed laid out its plans for how it might wind down its stimulus.

The central bank is buying $85 billion in bonds every month to hold down long-term interest rates and encourage borrowing and spending. Fed stimulus has underpinned a stock market rally that started in March 2009 by encouraging investors to put money into risky assets.

"What's driving that market up is that people are realizing that they are in a 'win-win' situation," said Rick Robinson, a regional Chief Investment Officer at Wells Fargo Private Bank. "If you have good economic data that should be good for stocks, if you have poor economic data ... that means the Fed will probably have its (stimulus) longer."

The Dow closed up 114.35 points, or 0.8 percent, to 15,024.49. The S&P 500 index climbed 9.94 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,613.20.

Nine of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 rose, led by financial stocks. Materials companies were the only group that fell.

In a sign that investors were once again more confident in holding riskier assets, the Russell 2000 index of small-company stocks rose 16.09 points, or 1.7 percent, to 979.92, more than twice as much as the rest of the market.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.48 percent from 2.54 percent late Wednesday. The yield climbed as high 2.66 percent on Monday, the highest since August 2011. The rate has surged since May 3, when it touched its low for the year of 1.63 percent. Concern that the Fed is poised to start pulling back on its stimulus prompted investors to sell bonds, pushing the yield higher.

Investors who have added bonds to their portfolios at the expense of stocks should consider reducing their fixed income holdings because yields are likely to rise further, said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management. Bonds rallied from 2007 to 2012, years that encompassed the financial crisis and the Great Recession. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to a record low of 1.39 percent in July last year.

"For the first time in five years, equities are the safest asset class," Cote said.

Higher yields on Treasury bonds translate into higher borrowing costs on many kinds of loans including home mortgages. Average U.S. rates on fixed mortgages surged this week to their highest levels in two years. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the average rate on the 30-year loan jumped to 4.46 percent. That's up from 3.93 percent last week and the highest since July 2011.

Higher rates have yet to slow the housing market. Homebuilders got a lift from a report Thursday suggesting that the housing recovery remains intact. The number of people who signed contracts to buy U.S. homes jumped in May to the highest level in more than six years.

D.R. Horton rose 79 cents, or 3.8 percent, to $21.71. Lennar gained $1.37 cents, or 3.8 percent, to $37.38.

Investors were also encouraged by comments from a key Fed official. Federal Reserve Bank of New York President William Dudley said the central bank would likely keep buying bonds if the economy failed to grow at the pace the Fed was expecting.

"If labor market conditions and the economy's growth momentum were to be less favorable than in the (Fed's) outlook_and this is what has happened in recent years_I would expect that the asset purchases would continue at a higher pace for longer," Dudley said at a news conference in New York.

While the S&P 500 index is on track to record its first monthly loss since October, the index is still poised to end June with the best first half of a year since 1998, when it rose 17.7 percent. The index has gained 13.2 percent so far this year.

The market will likely become more volatile though in the second half of the year as investors assess when the Fed will end its stimulus, said Kate Warne, investment strategist at retail brokerage firm Edward Jones.

"The general outlook for the economy is solid," said Warne. "The trend in stock prices is likely to continue to be higher, even though we'll see a lot more zig-zagging as everyone debates the timing of the Fed's next move."

In commodities trading, the price of oil rose $1.55, or 1.6 percent, to $97.05 a barrel. Gold fell $18.20, or 1.5 percent, to $1,211.60 an ounce. The price of the precious metal has plunged more than 10 percent in the last two weeks. Gold traded below $1,200 for the first time since August 2010.

In other trading, the Nasdaq composite rose 25.64 points, or 0.8 percent, to 3,401.86.

The dollar fell against the euro and the Japanese yen.

Among stocks making big moves:

? ConAgra Foods rose $1.69, or 5.1 percent, to $35.04 after the company posted a quarterly profit that came in a penny above the forecasts of Wall Street analysts. The maker of Chef Boyardee, Hebrew National and other packaged foods benefited from acquisitions and price cuts that helped increase sales. ?Payroll processor Paychex fell $1.39, or 3.7 percent, to $36.60 after posting earnings that fell short of analysts' expectations. The company said profit for the three months through May 31 came in roughly flat at 34 cents per share. Analysts had expected earnings of 37 cents a share.

(AP) ? Kevin Rudd was sworn in as Australian prime minister on Thursday three years and three days after he was ousted from the same job in an internal government showdown.

His office could not immediately confirm whether Rudd would replace his predecessor Julia Gillard in a visit to Indonesia that had been scheduled for next week. Gillard was dumped Wednesday by colleagues spooked by the party's dismal opinion polling.

Governor-General Quentin Bryce commissioned Rudd within half an hour of Parliament resuming for what is likely to be its last day before elections.

"I will do my absolute best," Rudd told Bryce, whom he appointed governor-general when he was last prime minister.

Anthony Albanese was sworn in as deputy prime minister and Chris Bowen was sworn in as treasurer during the same ceremony. Rudd has yet say when he will announce his complete Cabinet after seven ministers resigned following Gillard's ouster.

Rudd faces a potential no-confidence vote in Parliament, which he will likely survive although a loss could trigger an election as early as Aug. 3.

Gillard tendered her resignation as prime minister Wednesday night after losing a ballot of ruling lawmakers to Rudd 57 votes to 45.

Rudd has given no indication of whether he would stick with an election date of Sept. 14 set under Gillard.

Bryce revealed she took late-night legal advice on whether she should swear in Rudd.

A minority government such as Gillard led has not been seen in Australian federal politics since World War II, and the ruling Labor Party's leadership change has raised unique constitutional questions.

While Rudd has the support of his party, he does not necessarily have the support of a majority of lawmakers in the 150-seat House of Representatives, which a prime minister must have.

Acting Solicitor-General Robert Orr wrote to Bryce that Rudd should be commissioned as prime minister.

Bryce's secretary Stephen Brady wrote that she wanted an assurance from Rudd "that he will announce his appointment at the first possible opportunity to the House of Representatives on order to give the House the opportunity for whatever, if any, action it chooses to take."

Rudd plans to make a statement on the subject to Parliament later Thursday.

Wednesday's leadership ballot was forced by government lawmakers hoping to avoid a huge defeat in upcoming elections.

Rudd had warned that Labor was facing its worst election defeat under Gillard's leadership in the 111-year history of the Australian federation.

Gillard lacked Rudd's charisma, and although many Labor lawmakers preferred her style, her deepening unpopularity among voters compelled a majority to seek a change ahead of looming elections.

Labor has depended on independents and a minor party for its fragile ruling coalition, but Rudd appeared capable of retaining it after two independent lawmakers who did not back Gillard's government said they would support his.

"In 2007, the Australian people elected me to be their prime minister and that is a task I resume today with humility, with honor and with an important sense of energy and purpose," he said Wednesday after he was elected Labor leader.

The night Kane unmasked

When Kane made his debut at Badd Blood 1997?? revealing himself to his half-brother?The Undertaker ? the WWE Universe immediately began to wonder what The Big Red Monster looked like under his mask. The belief was that?Kane had perished in a fire long ago, so it was assumed that his mask and bodysuit covered Kane?s burned and scarred flesh.

As The Big Red Monster?s career continued beyond his rivalry with The Undertaker, his look remained mostly the same until the early 2000s. Learning how to speak with positive encouragement from X-Pac, Kane altered his mask to fully reveal his mouth. The Big Red Monster also adopted more athletic ring gear, showing that his flesh wasn?t charred at all.

WATCH KANE UNMASK | PHOTOS FROM KANE'S REVEALING NIGHT

On the June 23, 2003, episode of Raw, Kane battled?Triple H inside Madison Square Garden with his mask on the line. The Big Red Monster ultimately lost the contest and finally revealed his face in The World?s Most Famous Arena. However, there was more to the shocking revelation than just a match stipulation ? the man under the mask knew it was time to lose the hood.

?I felt like I had gone as far as I could with the mask at that point,? Kane told WWEClassics.com. ?At the time, the only people behind the decision to remove it were myself and Mr. McMahon.?

Excited at the prospect of unmasking and creating new intrigue around his persona, Kane was more than willing to do away with the mask.

?There was no trepidation on my part to lose the mask,? The Big Red Monster revealed. ?The thought on some peoples? minds was, ?If it isn?t broke, don?t fix it.? But this created something new for my career. I knew I could do it and the reaction of the WWE Universe was great.?

With his face now revealed to the world, Kane lost the anonymity he?d previously enjoyed and was now recognizable everywhere he went outside of the ring. It should have been a jarring lifestyle change, but the former?World Heavyweight Champion explained that wasn?t actually the case.

?You?ve got to understand, I?m a really big guy with really long hair,? Kane said. ?When most people see me, they don?t think I?m a nuclear physicist or a horse jockey. Pretty soon people connect the dots.?

For the better part of the next decade, Kane remained unmasked and continued to find success, capturing the ECW and World Heavyweight Championships and winning the Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

In December 2011, Kane re-emerged with a mask and a newfound aggression not seen since he first appeared in 1997. Still, the return of his masked visage did not lessen the impact of that night in New York City nearly 10 years earlier.

?I think the mask adds a lot of mystique, because you never know exactly what I?m thinking,? Kane said. ?When I was unmasked, you didn?t really get that sense, but since it went back on, you get the best of both worlds.?

Supermoon: Why it's the best lunar show in the solar system (+video)

Supermoon peaked Sunday morning, but good viewing will continue for the next few days. The unusual relationship between Earth and the moon makes supermoon a particularly good show.

By Mark Sappenfield,?Staff writer / June 23, 2013

Supermoon rises behind the Home Place clock tower in Prattville, Ala., Saturday.

"Supermoon" officially arrived at about 7 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time Sunday morning, with the moon making its closest swing by Earth this year. About a half hour later, the moon reached full status, making it appear 12 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a regular full moon.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Don't worry if you missed it. The effect should still linger for a few nights, meaning Sunday, Monday, and even Tuesday should give a good sense of this year's supermoon.

And social media was alight with the event, with pictures of Saturday night's supermoon making an appearance from Facebook to Instagram.

The show is the product of a cosmic quirk. Since planets and moons orbit in ellipses, not circles, there are times when they are closer to what they're orbiting and times when they're farther away. For moons, the point when they're closest to their planet is called perigee, the point farthest away is called apogee.

For Earth and the moon, perigee and apogee happen once each month, since the moon orbits the Earth once every 27 days. But because of small inconsistencies in the orbits, the moon's closest approach and its farthest distance are always slightly different.

The moon hit its monthly perigee Sunday morning, but what makes it worthy of the name "supermoon" was that it was the closest perigee of 2013. Moreover, since it coincided almost perfectly with a full moon, the effect was enhanced.

The moon's farthest apogee this year has already happened and is set to repeat itself next year during the Jan. 15, 2014, full moon. To see the visual difference in size between a perigee and apogee moon, click here.?

But what makes the moon so special? If everything in the solar system orbits in an ellipsis, shouldn't we have a "supersun," too.

In fact, we do. Since we orbit the sun once a year, supersuns only happen once a year. Our closest swing to the sun, called perihelion, also already happened this year, and will happen again on Jan. 4, 2014. (An "un-supersun," when the sun seems smallest at aphelion, is just around the corner: July 5.)

But will there be this much buzz next January with sungazers filling Twitter with pictures of a gigantic sun? Don't count on it.

The reason? the sun is obviously much farther away from Earth than is the moon, so the effect is not so noticeable. For Earth, the distance between aphelion and perihelion is about 3 million miles. But even at perihelion, the Earth is still 91 million miles from the sun.?

In addition, Earth's orbit around the sun is more nearly circular than is the moon's orbit around us, with only Venus and Neptune having more circular orbits than Earth. Mercury has the most eccentric orbit ? ranging from a perihelion of 29 million miles to an aphelion of 43 million miles ? meaning it has a truly dramatic supersun (if you can stand the 800 degree Fahrenheit temperatures on the sun-side surface).

By contrast, the moon's orbit around Earth is the most elliptical orbit of any major moon in the solar system. Combine that with the fact that the moon is comparatively close to Earth, so it looks large in our skies, and supermoon earns its name.

Respawn Entertainment talks Xbox Live Cloud, praises its multiplayer servers

Microsoft's been quick to point out how it's beefing up the Xbox Live Cloud in preparation for its next wunderconsole, and now Respawn Entertainment is stepping in to detail just what Redmond's architecture means for multiplayer on Titanfall. The firm's Jon Shiring, who works with the game's cloud computing integration, says that the next-gen title boasts vastly improved online play since it leans on Ballmer and Company's cloud hardware instead of users to host sessions. By taking advantage of Microsoft's servers, the futuristic shooter benefits from more reliable bandwidth, snappier matchmaking times, extra CPU power and the elimination of latency-based host advantage and hacked-host cheating, to boot. Naturally, using dedicated servers can cost a ton, but Respawn says Microsoft managed to keep things comparatively inexpensive for developers, in part thanks to its Azure tech. For the dev's comprehensive write-up on just what this revamped Xbox Live architecture may mean for gaming, click the source link below.

Vertu's Perry Oosting steps down as CEO, replaced by CMO Max Pogliani

According to a statement we received earlier, Vertu's Perry Oosting (pictured left) has stepped down after his successful four year stint as President and CEO, though he'll continue to invest in the company. Despite the relatively short run, the Dutch exec oversaw Vertu's departure from Nokia and subsequently launched the company's first-ever Android device, the Ti. Little is known about the reasons behind this change, but judging by Oosting's considerable knowledge of the luxury goods market, he'll have plenty of options for his next move.

The luxury phone maker will now be led by CMO Massimiliano "Max" Pogliani (pictured right), who's probably best known for building up Nespresso, Nestlé's premium coffee brand, prior to joining Vertu last November. Pogliani will be assisted by ex-Jimmy Choo COO Jonathan Sinclair, who joined Vertu this month under the same title. Press release after the break.

In multiple sclerosis animal study, absence of gene leads to earlier, more severe disease

June 24, 2013 ? Scientists led by a UCSF neurology researcher are reporting that they have identified the likely genetic mechanism that causes some patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) to quickly progress to a debilitating stage of the disease while other patients progress much more slowly.

The team found that the absence of the gene Tob1 in CD4+ T cells, a type of immune cell, was the key to early onset of more serious disease in an animal model of MS.

Senior author Sergio Baranzini, PhD, a UCSF associate professor of neurology, said the finding may ultimately lead to the development of a test that predicts the course of MS in individual patients. Such a test could help physicians tailor personalized treatments, he said.

The study, done in collaboration with UCSF neurology researchers Scott Zamvil, MD, and Jorge Oksenberg, PhD, was published on June 24, 2013 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

MS is an inflammatory disease in which the protective myelin sheathing that coats nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord is damaged and ultimately stripped away -- a process known as demyelination. During the highly variable course of the disease, a wide range of cognitive, debilitating and painful neurological symptoms can result.

In previously published work, Baranzini and his research team found that patients at an early stage of MS known as clinically isolated syndrome who expressed low amounts of Tob1 were more likely to exhibit further signs of disease activity -- a condition known as relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis -- earlier than those who expressed normal levels of the gene.

The current study, according to Baranzini, had two goals: to recapitulate in an animal model what the researchers had observed in humans, and uncover the potential mechanism by which it occurs.

The authors were successful on both counts. They found that when an MS-like disease was induced in mice genetically engineered to be deficient in Tob1, the mice had significantly earlier onset compared with wild-type mice, and developed a more aggressive form of the disease.

Subsequent experiments revealed the probable cause: the absence of Tob1 in just CD4+ T cells. The scientists demonstrated this by transferring T cells lacking the Tob1 gene into mice that had no immune systems but had normal Tob1 in all other cells. They found that the mice developed earlier and more severe disease than mice that had normal Tob1 expression in all cells including CD4+.

"This shows that Tob1 only needs to be absent in this one type of immune cell in order to reproduce our initial observations in mice lacking Tob1 in all of their cells," said Baranzini.

The researchers also found the likely mechanism of disease progression in the Tob1-deficient mice: higher levels of Th1 and Th17 cells, which cause an inflammatory response against myelin, and lower levels of Treg cells, which normally regulate inflammatory responses. The inflammation results in demyelination.

The research is significant for humans, said Baranzini, because the presence or absence of Tob1 in CD4+ cells could eventually serve as a prognostic biomarker that could help clinicians predict the course and severity of MS in individual patients. "This would be useful and important," he said, "because physicians could decide to switch or modify therapies if they know whether the patient is likely to have an aggressive course of disease, or a more benign course."

Ultimately, predicted Baranzini, "This may become an example of personalized medicine. When the patient comes to the clinic, we will be able to tailor the therapy based on what the tests tell us. We're now laying the groundwork for this to happen."

Co-authors of the study are Ulf Schulze-Topphoff, PhD, of UCSF; Simona Casazza, PhD, of UCSF at the time of the study; Michel Varrin-Doyer, PhD; and Kara Pekarek of UCSF; Raymond A. Sobel, MD, of Stanford University School of Medicine, and Stephen L. Hauser, MD, of UCSF.

The study was supported by funds from the National Institutes of Health (R01 grants NS26799, NS049477, AI073737, AI059709 and NS063008), the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Robert Tillman Family Fund, the Guthy-Jackson Charitable Foundation and the Maisin Foundation.

Jim Carrey Needs to Relax

Breaking News

"Kick Ass 2" star Jim Carrey is confusing real-life violence with make-believe violence ... so says the film's writer, who's now firing back against Carrey for criticizing the movie's blood and guts.

As we reported, Carrey has officially withdrawn his support for the movie, claiming he can't advocate such a relentlessly violent film in the wake of the Sandy Hook Massacre.

But "Kick Ass 2" writer Mark Millar says Carrey's criticism is misplaced, writing, "Like Jim, I'm horrified by real-life violence (even though I'm Scottish), but Kick-Ass 2 isn't a documentary. No actors were harmed in the making of this production! This is fiction."

He posted the statement on his website, and hammered home his message to Jim by pointing out "Superman just snapped a guy's f***ing neck."

But still ... no hard feelings between Millar and Carrey -- the writer says, "Jim, I love ya and I hope you reconsider."

Tigers rally late to beat Red Sox 7-5

DETROIT (AP) ? Avisail Garcia lifted a fly ball to right field, Daniel Nava drifted back to make the play ? and then a sloppy game swung in Detroit's favor for good.

Nava appeared to have the ball in his glove, but when it came free second base umpire Mike DiMuro ruled there was no catch. That was the first of two Boston errors that helped the Tigers score three runs in the eighth inning en route to a 7-5 victory over the Red Sox on Sunday.

"Sometimes it's your day, sometimes it isn't," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said.

Justin Verlander struggled again for Detroit, but the Tigers rallied to win when Boston made a complete mess of the last few innings. The Red Sox allowed Detroit to tie the game at 4 in the seventh on a hit batter with the bases loaded ? and then in the eighth, they gave up three runs on one hit.

Boston was convinced afterward that DiMuro had gotten the game's key call wrong.

"I know I made the catch," Nava said. "Sometimes calls go your way, sometimes they don't."

Nava, in right because Shane Victorino left the game with lower back tightness, went back toward the wall and tried to make an awkward-looking basket catch. A replay showed he might have lost the ball while transferring it from his glove to his throwing hand.

"To have a catch, you have to have complete control and voluntary release," said crew chief Ted Barrett, the third base umpire. "(DiMuro) had him with control, but did not have the voluntary release. When he flipped the ball out of his glove, he never got it into his hand. That's not voluntary release."

Boston manager John Farrell was ejected for arguing the call.

"When you spend the rest of the game in the clubhouse, you probably have a difference of opinion," Farrell said. "Clearly, the call was missed. He caught it, he went to transfer to his throwing hand, dropped it at that point."

Garcia ended up on second, and Bryan Holaday's bunt also worked out nicely for Detroit when pitcher Andrew Miller (0-2) threw wildly to first for another error, putting runners at first and third with nobody out in a tie game.

Austin Jackson walked, and Alex Wilson came on and allowed Torii Hunter's sacrifice fly that gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead. Miguel Cabrera was intentionally walked, and Prince Fielder hit a two-run single off Craig Breslow.

Joaquin Benoit (2-0) got the final four outs for the Tigers, although he allowed a run in the ninth.

The Tigers were fortunate just to tie it in the seventh. After Jackson's leadoff single, Hunter hit a line drive that second baseman Dustin Pedroia dropped. It appeared the Red Sox might get a double play out of it, because Hunter was slow getting out of the batter's box, but Jackson retreated to first.

Pedroia threw to first, retiring Hunter while Jackson was still standing on the base. When Boston retired Hunter, it meant Jackson was no longer forced to second, so he remained safely at first.

Cabrera and Fielder followed with singles to load the bases, and after Victor Martinez struck out, Jhonny Peralta was hit by a pitch to tie it at 4.

The Red Sox took a 4-3 lead in the fourth on Victorino's run-scoring groundout.

Verlander allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out four, and his ERA went up to 3.90. It was the second straight start in which he lasted only five innings.

"That's sports. There's ups and downs. Nobody's at the peak of their game forever," Verlander said. "I'll get back there. I will. It's just, like I said, finding that click ? finding that rhythm."

Detroit led 2-0 after the first inning, but Verlander gave up two runs in the second.

The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the second, but Verlander again couldn't hold the lead. Pedroia reached on an infield single, and David Ortiz's single put runners on first and third. Mike Napoli's grounder tied the game at 3.

Boston starter Felix Doubront was in trouble at the start, walking the first two Detroit hitters and then allowing Cabrera's double that bounced over the wall in center field for the slugger's 75th RBI of the year.

Fielder's RBI groundout made it 2-0, but Jacoby Ellsbury made a nice sliding catch in center on Peralta's drive for the third out, preventing any more scoring.

Detroit loaded the bases for Hunter with two outs in the fourth, but Victorino made a nice catch and held on while slamming into the wall in foul ground in right.

Boston is giving Andrew Bailey a break from closing after he lost Thursday's game at Detroit in the ninth inning. He came on with a one-run lead in the seventh Sunday but allowed singles to Jackson and Cabrera before giving way to Miller.

Detroit's bullpen has also been maligned this year, but Drew Smyly pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings before Benoit finished.

Fielder was Detroit's designated hitter, leaving Martinez to make a rare appearance at first base. Martinez made a nice play in the sixth, diving to his left to knock down Ellsbury's grounder, then flipping the ball backward to Smyly, who covered for the 3-1 putout.

Hunter made a tumbling catch in right for the last out of the game.

NOTES: Boston did not put LHP Franklin Morales on the DL after he exited Saturday night's game with discomfort in his throwing shoulder. Farrell said Morales would be evaluated thoroughly on Monday. ... Both teams are off Monday. Boston returns home and sends RHP Ryan Dempster (4-8) to the mound against Colorado RHP Juan Nicasio (4-3) on Tuesday night. Detroit's homestand continues Tuesday night. Tigers RHP Rick Porcello (4-4) faces LHP C.J. Wilson (6-5) of the Los Angeles Angels.

Obama to nominate Democrat, Republican to FEC

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House says President Barack Obama intends to nominate two lawyers with government experience to become commissioners on the Federal Election Commission, the agency that oversees and enforces campaign finance laws. One of the nominees would fill a Democratic vacancy on the commission and the other would replace the current vice chairman, Republican Donald F. McGahn.

Obama's nominee to the Republican seat is Lee Goodman, who served as a top aide to former Republican Gov. Jim Gilmore of Virginia. Obama's Democratic nominee is Ann Ravel, the chair of the California Fair Political Practices Commission. She would fill the seat vacated earlier this year by Cynthia Bauerly.

If confirmed by the Senate, the FEC would have all of its six commissioners ? three Democrats and three Republicans.
