What is RA?
Rheumatoid Arthritis or?RA refers to a chronic, incurable syndrome whose main manifestation is nonspecific inflammation of the peripheral joints that may structurally degrade the joint over time. In English please! This is a condition that completely alters a person?s life. RA is painful and can greatly limit mobility. This is a long-term disease with symptoms that come and go. Nearly 2 million Americans live with RA and most of those people are women.?RA involves different parts the body but the joints are always affected. When ?flair up? occurs, joints become inflamed. ?This inflammation is the body?s natural response to infection or other threats, but in the case of RA, inflammation occurs extraneously and for unknown reasons.
In Western medicine, RA is considered to be an autoimmune disease whose cause ?is still unidentified. It is usually treated with steroids, NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)?and immunosuppresants, and even surgery in very advanced cases.
Acupuncture has been shown to provide pain relief for RA patients, as well as slow the progression or even initiate remission of RA. Acupuncture can relieve pain and swelling associated with RA, promote joint healing, and re-train the immune system to fight this disease.

Case Study #1: Rose, age 60- Began treatment December 11, 2012
My name is Rose, and I?d like to tell you how acupuncture treatments have affected my life.
I?m 60 years old. I have had rheumatoid arthritis for seven years and have been on a stable prescription regimen for the past four years or so. About a year ago, I began having pain in my hips, and physical therapy helped. There was no change to my meds, and this started my interest in alternative therapies. Eager to reduce the medication (and encouraged to do so by my rheumatologist), I was pleased to participate in an acupuncture case study.
At the beginning of each acupuncture session, Samantha and I talk about how I?m feeling and what is bothering me most. She then places the needles accordingly. Sometimes they?re for specific pain, sometimes for general wellness.
So far, I?ve had six acupuncture treatments over seven weeks. On Samantha?s recommendation, I?ve also begun using Celapro (green tea extract) and Ultra Inflamx (not ultra tasty, but I persist). During this time, I have also been gradually reducing the amount of prednisone I take daily. Initially, I was taking three mg/day, and now I?m taking one and two mg on alternate days. While I have tried twice over the past three years to reduce the prednisone dosage, this is the first time I have succeeded. My goal is to be off prednisone entirely.
One pretty constant problem for me has been fatigue, not uncommon with rheumatoid arthritis. This has become less of an issue and I believe it is due to the treatments.
I have had a bad right shoulder from an injury around 30 years ago (remember, I?m 60), and had received cortisone injections periodically. I have not had a shot in ten months, and the range of motion in the shoulder has substantially increased since I began acupuncture.
These sessions are fairly painless, very calming, and have helped me become much more active again. I can exercise regularly and do things to have fun more regularly- like exploring the great parks in Minneapolis!
Case Study #2: Jenni, age 36- Began treatment December 4, 2012
I began having symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) eleven years ago when I was twenty-five years old, but it wasn?t until three years later that I was ?officially? diagnosed. I was on a mess of drugs, some of them very strong immunosuppressants, none of which seemed to work. ?After a year of pharmaceutically induced weight gain and constantly being sick with minimal relief in my joint pain, I said ?enough is enough? and began to research other options that lead me to take a holistic approach to my health. For the past eight years I have taken a ?whole foods? approach to my diet which means eating foods in their natural state that are fresh and organic and come from the earth as opposed to processed foods, while also eliminating the foods that cause inflammation such as dairy, wheat, meat, and eggs. ?The results I had from this shift were outstanding and allowed me to incorporate exercise back into my life which is another important factor to my overall well-being. ? A body in motion stays in motion.?
With all of these positive changes, and my doctor telling me that my ?disease? was in remission with no further joint damage, I still had some pain, stiffness, and swelling from the past damage. ?Essentially, I was ?stuck.?
I read about acupuncture and how its premise is based on correcting imbalances in the flow of energy in our bodies, which seemed to be the root of my problem. ?When I started seeing Samantha at Magna, I noticed pretty drastic results almost immediately. The swelling in my knees has noticeably decreased and I also have more movement in my wrists, which means the stiffness is subsiding. ?The procedures themselves are painless and rather relaxing which gives me time to do a bit of meditation and bring myself back to center, another important aspect of maintaining my overall health.
I am so grateful that I explored acupuncture and Samantha has been an absolute blessing. ?She is extremely knowledgeable about the practice and I would highly recommend her to anyone who is considering this holistic treatment as part of enhancing their well-being.
