'Missing' Calif. couple found safe in Peru

LIMA (Reuters) - A young California couple feared by family to have been abducted while on a cycling trip through Peru have safely surfaced on a river boat headed for Ecuador, surprised to learn they were subjects of an international search, the Peruvian government said on Tuesday.

"The American tourists are continuing to enjoy their trip in the Peruvian Amazon," the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism said in a statement, adding that a national police official had spoken with the couple and found them to be "in good health."

Garrett Hand and his girlfriend, Jamie Neal, both 25, had last been heard from by friends and relatives about a month ago, according to co-workers and a statement issued on Monday by the U.S. Embassy in Lima, the Peruvian capital.

The embassy said then that Peruvian authorities had mounted a search for the pair, who are residents of Oakland, California.

The couple were said to have vanished while en route to Lima from Cusco, in the mountainous southeastern Peruvian interior near the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, an area where U.S. citizens have been warned by the embassy of kidnapping risks.

That advisory last month was widely interpreted as linked to efforts by a remnant band of Maoist Shining Path rebels to repel a government push to regain control of jungle valleys that are rife with coca cultivation and cocaine trafficking.

Friends and family of Hand and Neal said they worried the pair had been abducted and that their bank accounts had remained idle since they disappeared.

But a day after relatives and co-workers went public with efforts to organize a search for the couple, the Peruvian government said national police had caught up with the duo in the northern village of Angoteros along the Napo River.

SURPRISED BY CONCERN

The tourism ministry said the couple were passengers on a boat headed up the river, a tributary of the Amazon, to a town on the border with Ecuador.

The couple "were surprised by the concern generated by family, friends and the international community after the cessation of their communications in late January," a ministry statement said.

It added that the pair had been traveling overland by bicycle, bus and river boat through remote areas where access to telephones and the Internet was limited.

Meanwhile, Hand's mother, Francine Fitzgerald, posted a message on Facebook saying she had been informed by U.S. Embassy and Peruvian authorities that the couple were spotted in a remote village and were now on a river boat.

She gave few other details but said she would not be satisfied until receiving "proof of life" from her son.

"Proof of life is my son's voice on the phone and a picture of him holding the missing poster," she wrote.

ABC News reported on Tuesday that the tourism ministry was sending a crew with video cameras to the location where the couple's boat is scheduled to dock on Wednesday to show they are alive and well.

The U.S. Embassy issued a separate statement saying it was aware of "reports that the missing U.S. citizens have been located," adding, "we are working with local authorities to confirm those reports."

The location of the couple in northern Peru was reinforced by previous accounts from police and officials of an ecological community in the Amazonian region of Iquitos. They had told Reuters earlier this week that Hand and Neal were seen embarking on an upriver boat trip toward Ecuador on February 16, three weeks after their families had last heard from them.

Friends, family say goodbye to Mindy McCready

By Suzette Laboy, The Associated Press

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- As her music played in the background, country music star Mindy McCready was remembered Tuesday by friends and family as a fun and talented singer who also "wanted to be healed" from her past.

Alan Diaz / AP

Gayle Inge, mother of country music star Mindy McCready, speaks during her daughter's funeral ceremony at the Crossroads Baptist Church in Fort Myers, Fla., on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

About 200 friends and family gathered in the 37-year-old singer's Florida hometown of Fort Myers. A large screen behind the altar of Crossroads Baptist Church was filled with her images and her portrait stood nearby.?

"Our Mindy was so tired. She felt helpless," said McCready's mother, Gayle Inge. "She was in her darkest moment and she was hurt by so many allegations. She was too emotional to understand."

McCready, whose real name was Malinda Gayle McCready, committed suicide Feb. 17 at her home in Arkansas, days after leaving a court-ordered substance abuse treatment program. The mother of two died from a single gunshot to the head about a month after her longtime boyfriend David Wilson's death, also thought to be suicide, in the same place.?

Inge acknowledged that her daughter had faced many battles but now: "Her spirit found healing on the other side."?

McCready's personal problems started in 2004 and included a custody battle with her mother over one of her sons. She was briefly hospitalized in 2010 after police responded to an overdose call to a home her mother owned in North Fort Myers, Fla., and she later appeared on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew," where she declared herself clean from drugs.?

McCready's family declined to address any custody issue at the funeral.?

"She wanted them to know that nothing, not even death, could separate her from them," Gayle Inge said of McCready's two sons, Zander Ryan and Zayne Christopher. "She's healed. She's no longer sick," she added, referring to what she told McCready's sons.?

A separate funeral organized by her friends and the music community is tentatively scheduled for March 6 in Nashville, Tenn.?

McCready's stepfather, brothers and cousin also shared their fondest ? and often funny ? memories of McCready.?

"You all know I grew up coming from a broken home," said brother Timothy McCready, wiping away tears. "It makes your brothers and sisters really important to you. We used to joke about how she raised us...we raised each other, all of us. And she probably got us all in a lot more trouble than she got us out of," he later joked about his sister.?

"I just know that Mindy is on vacacioun where she is," said younger brother Skylar Phelan, referring to how McCready often used the Latin word for "vacation" to get out of chores.?

McCready grew up in Fort Myers, where she took private vocal lessons and later sang in karaoke bars.?

Family friend Julie Ende-Killion remembers the day when McCready won her first award for "Ten Thousand Angels."?

"And I remember her coming out of the trailer," she recalled. "I think she was in Kenny Chesney's trailer because she didn't even have her own dressing room at that time. Nashville is a pretty cool place. She made her mark on it."?

McCready arrived in Nashville in 1994 and hit the top of the country charts before her personal problems sidetracked her career.?

In 1996, her "Guys Do It All the Time" hit No. 1. Her other hits included "Ten Thousand Angels," which her stepfather sang during the funeral.?

"She's our special angel," said Michael Inge. "She sang a song years ago about 'Ten Thousand Angels' watching over her and now she is in the presence of all those 10 thousand angels," Michael Inge said.?

How To Get Clients Without Cold Calling. | Internet Marketing Montreal

A little about my personal story, I came to Canada some years ago and decided to start my consultant business giving internet marketing advice and services to businesses.
I had two main problems:

  1. even though I knew how to speak English I was incredibly insecure about my accent
  2. I had previous cold calling experience and knew how soul crushing it was, how your negotiation position was reduced and the price was the only factor to negotiate.

I started cold calling with very minimal to no results but instead of hitting my head against a wall or brainwashing myself about how to be ?tougher and keep cold calling.? I started looking for a different way to get clients.
One day while surfing the net I found Gary Halbert?s website, this is where I learned how he used to sell different products and services via mail, I devoured his site and applied the principles to little info products I had created. I wrote sales copy to sell the product and Holy Crap ? it started pulling sales!

It was then when I decided to use the same direct marketing principles in order to attract clients. Following are the resources I have used in order to get clients without cold calling. I have been a consultant for lawyers; a world renowned luxury resort chain and I am currently working with several adult oriented sites.

Info Marketing

Perry Marshall
You will learn not only the principles of PPC and direct marketing but more importantly the principles of sales and marketing. I have personally bought many products from him and just the information alone that he gives you for free in his auto responders is by far one of the best marketing lessons you will get anywhere.

Dan Kennedy
This man taught me the principles of information marketing, how to use and create real authority and how to use magazines and newsletters to attract more clients.

Vistaprint
In order to print my direct marketing message on my business cards, postcards and direct mail pieces. Great prices, great interfaces, they allow you to export lists of prospects, designs, etc?

Print your book
One very important piece of being a respected consultant is to have a book that is part of your info marketing arsenal, the people who buy your book are one of the best prospects, those who buy information to solve a problem are way more qualified to hire somebody to implement the solution than those who don?t, so here are some great resources to self-publish your book.

Create Space

www.lulu.com

When you are going to mail an offer the most important thing is the quality of the list, that is why you need to know the standard rate and Data List Book, you can order it online here.

www.srds.com

or you can get a copy at your local library there are thousands of lists of any topic you need.

Another weapon in your info marketing arsenal is article marketing, but not in the usual way, sending your best articles to magazines and local newspapers is a great way to get qualified leads, again a prospect buying information about a topic or a specific problem is more willing to pay for the implementation.

The technical journals struggle to get good content in every issue, so as long as you deliver your articles on time and they are 90% content 10% pitch, the editors will like you.

www.magazines.com

This site can help you get the names and sometimes even the contact information of many technical journal editors.

Giving conferences and seminars for a large group or even 3 -5 attendees is another great way to produce content for your articles, books and lead generation, for this I have used:

www.meetup.com

For $17/month you can create a local group about your themes, you can receive leads and contacts, regardless of whether you charge a fee or do it for free.

www.anymeeting.com

A free webinar system that allows you to charge money for your webinars (Anymeeting.com charge a fee of $2.50 or 2.5% of how much you charge per sale) it also allows you to record your webinar and to charge the prospects for a copy of the recording (again they will charge the 2.5% fee for each sale made.)

www.gotomeeting.com

Once you start generating more money and follower?s gotomeeting.com is the way to go for $49/month.

A crucial part in converting more visitors into prospects and prospects into clients is the follow up and in order to leverage all your marketing on auto responder is the way to go.

Aweber

Without doubt this is the best option, you configure a set of ten value packed, direct marketing oriented emails and you will be rolling, as part of the follow up system you need to include a contract for your prospects to download and sign, I have used Aweber for this.

www.lawdepot.ca

I am going to be updating this list when I get new resources and I would have to invite the other direct marketing lovers to make this a resource page for people who want to market their services in a better way.

sales teleselling: What's the Difference Between Inbound and ...

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Despite all the advancements in technology nowadays, telemarketing still remains to be one of the most dependable measures to publicize your business. With Business Process Outsourcing business establishments becoming a trend lately, they give a reasonably priced service to areas where labor is deemed expensive.

A telemarketing firm can branch out into several categories but can be viewed into two basic categories--they are the inbound and the outbound telemarketing. The application of these services is dependent on which one will be the most ideal to utilize for your organization.

Most people think of Inbound Telemarketing as comparable to customer support. This kind of service is slightly dissimilar to that of the latter because it will take into account some sales transactions in the process. This is because of the fact that when we mention customer service, it exclusively represents an agent answering the calls of customers just to reply to questions and aid them with their troubles and problems.

For instance, a travel agency for an airline firm would attempt and generate leads and also collect data regarding the people who they know would buy tickets for airline travel sometime in the future. Once these leads have already settled in purchasing the ticket, the contact center agent from this firm can now tend to the call of the lead into flight reservation for the person. This is referred as order processing and it's a part of inbound telemarketing.

In outbound telemarketing kind of service, call center agents usually perform a procedure also known as cold calling in which they will call prospects and attempt to engage them into buying a particular solution which is being offered to their leads. These prospects don't know that they will be called by the phone representatives so there will be some times that they'll be disrupted in what they're trying to do before the agent called.

Aside from sales, phone representatives can also perform lead generation campaigns. This is where call center agents will call prospective clients and attempt to collect as much data as they can from the people they've called.

The major distinction between inbound and outbound services from these firms is that in inbound services, the phone agents receive calls from clients while outbound services will contact people and try to convert them into customers.

With inbound call center services, sales training in the organization is less stressful than that of outbound services. This is for the reason that inbound call center representatives cater to individuals which are already customers even prior to the call was made. Outbound call center agents call for more training in sales than that of the inbound since it's part of their job to meet a definite quota to satisfy the standards granted upon them by their clients.

Though these two kinds of services may be unlike, they can always work hand in hand to complete processes within a company. When these two services work together, a company can serve the clients and prospects with ease.

Belinda Summers works as a professional consultant. She helps businesses increase their revenue by lead generation and appointment setting services through Telemarketing. To know more about this visit: http://www.callboxinc.com/

Macroweather is what you expect

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

While short-term weather is notoriously volatile, climate is thought to represent a kind of average weather pattern over a long period of time. This dichotomy provides the analytical framework for scientific thinking about atmospheric variability, including climate change.

But the weather-climate dichotomy paints an incomplete picture ? one that may be complicating efforts to untangle natural variations in climate from man-made effects, according to McGill University physics professor Shaun Lovejoy. In a paper published recently in the journal Eos, Transactions, American Geophysical Union, and in a forthcoming book, Lovejoy argues that statistical analysis shows there is a period between short-term weather and long-term climate that should be recognized as distinct.

Using the three-part atmospheric regime also makes the challenge of climate modeling more precise, and could open up a new set of approaches for modeling and predicting the climate, Lovejoy says.

Lovejoy used a new kind of "fluctuation analysis" to show that there are three atmospheric regimes, each with different types of variability. Between the weather (periods less than 10 days) and the climate (periods longer than about 30 to 100 years), there is an intermediate "macroweather" regime. A graphic representation makes the case intuitively clear.

The accompanying chart shows examples from weather (one-hour resolution, bottom), macroweather (20 days, middle) and climate (one century, top). The daily and annual cycles were removed and 720 consecutive points from each resolution are shown so that the differences in the characters of each regime are visually obvious.

At the bottom, the weather curve "wanders" up or down in a path resembling a drunkard's walk. In the middle, the macroweather curve has a markedly different character: upward fluctuations are typically followed by nearly cancelling downward ones. "The longer the period over which we average it, the smaller the variations become," Lovejoy says.

By contrast, the century scale climate curve (top) displays again a weather-like, wandering variability. (While this plot shows temperatures, other atmospheric fields ? including wind, humidity and precipitation -- are similar.)

Although the ultimate implications of macroweather may not be known for some time, a basic change in our understanding of what climate is will surely have repercussions, Lovejoy notes.

"Macroweather clarifies the distinction between natural and anthropogenic types of variability and allows us to separate the two with more confidence."

The old saying that "climate is what you expect, weather is what you get," also needs to be reconsidered, he adds. "Macroweather is what we expect."

Collaperty launches 'Kickstarter' for Property Investors | Investors Beat

Boston-based friends and business partners Rishi Palriwala, Afjal Wahidi,?Amit Patel?and?Qais Alkurdi?were first profiled in our Dirty 30 series. Yesterday, they collectively launched Collaperty ? a new social platform incorporating elements of crowdfunding set to revolutionize the way real estate investors connect and fund deals. Investors Beat has the exclusive on the launch.

With the introduction of Facebook and Twitter, social networking has provided people with a new way to connect and the real estate industry is no different. This pool of savvy people are always looking at better ways to collaborate and do business whether that be finding other investors to fund their investments or locating profitable deals.

?The real estate market has always existed, but the need for a platform like this is certainly timely,? says Collaperty co-founder Afjal Wahidi. ?Due to the downward economy, the lack of capital from banks, and the lack of one central infrastructure for real estate enthusiasts to meet, the Collaperty model made sense.?

The website, conceptualized in 2011 and now open to the public, is designed for all real estate enthusiasts, especially those who are looking to expand their business in the US. ?The current U.S. securities law allows the accredited investor community the most access on our platform: from seeing deals to being able to invest in them,? says Wahidi. It is anticipated that the passing of the JOBS Act will allow more investors to play the property game.

?Collaperty?s ability to allow investors to collectively pool funds towards a specific deal stands out the most,? explains Wahidi. ?This breaks down the capital barrier to entry per investor and allows for new investment across property types, giving individuals the opportunity to diversify their portfolio even more.?

The website may be new, but its slew of functions bring promise, incorporating design features from the best ? namely Kickstarter, LinkedIn and AngelList. It allows users to share their investing experience and establish an investor?s credibility through their profile. Collaperty also allows a search for potential deals permitting Sponsors and Investors to invest together, giving you greater control of your property investments. Investors Beat is excited about this launch and we predict that it will change the way property investing is done forever.

Collaperty is holding its official launch party on March 7th in Boston. Investors Beat will be onsite for the exclusive coverage. Stay tuned!

Songbirds? brains coordinate singing with intricate timing

Feb. 27, 2013 ? As a bird sings, some neurons in its brain prepare to make the next sounds while others are synchronized with the current notes?a coordination of physical actions and brain activity that is needed to produce complex movements, new research at the University of Chicago shows.

In an article in the current issue of Nature, neuroscientist Daniel Margoliash and colleagues show, for the first time, how the brain is organized to govern skilled performance?a finding that may lead to new ways of understanding human speech production.

The new study shows that birds? physical movements actually are made up of a multitude of smaller actions. ?It is amazing that such small units of movements are encoded, and so precisely, at the level of the forebrain,? said Margoliash, a professor of organismal biology and anatomy and psychology at UChicago.

?This work provides new insight into how the physics of producing vocal signals are represented in the brain to control vocalizations,? said Howard Nusbaum, a professor of psychology at UChicago and an expert on speech.

By decoding the neural representation of communication, Nusbaum explained, the research may shed light on speech problems such as stuttering or aphasia (a disorder following a stroke). And it offers an unusual window into how the brain and body carry out other kinds of complex movement, from throwing a ball to doing a backflip.

?A big question in muscle control is how the motor system organizes the dynamics of movement,? said Margoliash. Movements like reaching or grasping are difficult to study because they entail many variables, such as the angles of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and fingers; the forces of many muscles; and how these change over time," he said.

"With all this complexity, it has been difficult to determine which of the many variables that describe movements are the ones that are represented in the brain and used to control movements," he said.

It?s difficult to find a natural framework with which to analyze the activity of single neurons. The bird study provided us a perfect opportunity,? Margoliash said. Margoliash is a pioneer in the study of brain function in birds, with studies that include how learning occurs when a bird sleeps and recalls singing a song.

For the current study, he worked with Ana Amador, a post-doctoral researcher at UChicago, and University of Buenos Aires scholars Yonatan Sanz Perl and Gabriel Mindlin. The four are co-authors of the Nature paper ?Elementary Gesture Dynamics are Encoded by Song Premotor Cortical Neurons.?

For the study, the team studied zebra finches while the birds sang and while they slept (when songs were broadcast through a speaker). Researchers recorded the activity of single neurons through tiny wires connected to the birds? brains.

Mindlin, professor of physics at the University of Buenos Aires, and his students have created a mathematical model of the mechanics of the movement of the syrinx, the avian vocal organ. The team used that information to track the connections between brain responses and the physical actions needed to produce a song.

They reduced the description of a song to only two variables?the pressure pushing air through the syrinx and the tension of the vibrating membranes of the syrinx that are needed to produce the song. They also compared the timing predicted by the model with the timing of responses of the neurons in the bird?s ?song system.?

The study revealed how activity at higher levels of the brain tracks basic motor functions. The team also avoided a problem scholars previously encountered. In the past, investigators did not know how to relate song with the variables of pressure and tension, and so they had an incomplete understanding of how neurons controlled song, Margoliash said. For example, a previous theory of song control contended that these complex movements are governed by a clock in the brain that runs independent of the song.

By looking at the physiological variables that the bird uses to control singing, the team was able to find something others had not noticed before: the precise timing between the firing of the neuron and the action connected with it.

?One fascinating observation we made really surprised us: that the forebrain neurons fire precisely at the time a sound transition is being produced,? Margoliash explained. ?But it takes far too much time for the activity in the forebrain to influence the bird?s sound box in the periphery,? Margoliash continued. The neurons that the team investigated are tracking and encoding particular moments in song but are not directly controlling them. ?Lower levels of the brain are controlling the sound output, but the timing of these neurons suggest that they are helping to evaluate feedback from the produced sound.?

Similar feedback plays an essential role in coordinating human speech, and in the skilled performance of athletes and musicians. Now, for the first time, there is a mathematical description that matches brain activity for highly skilled behavior, in the beautiful songs of birds.

timothyecarhart: Treat malware as biology to know it better

Hal Hodson, technology reporter

Classifying different kinds of malware is notoriously hard, but crucial if computer defences are to keep up with the ever-evolving ecosystem of malicious programs. Treating computer viruses as biological puzzle could help computer scientists get a better handle on the wide world of malware.?

Ajit Narayanan and Yi Chen at the Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, converted the signatures of 120 worms and viruses into an amino acid representation. The signatures are more usually presented in hexadecimals - a base-16 numbering system which uses the digits 0 to 9 as well as the letters a to f - but the amino acid "alphabet" is better suited to machine-learning techniques that can analyse a piece of code to figure out whether it matches a known malware signature.

Generally, malware experts identify and calculate the signatures of new malware, but it can be hard for them keep up. While machine learning can help, it is limited because the hexadecimal signatures can be different lengths: Narayanan's team found that using machine learning to help classify the hexadecimal malware signatures resulted in accuracy no better than flipping a coin.

But some techniques used in bioinformatics for comparing amino acid sequences take differing lengths into account. After applying these to malware, Narayanan's average accuracy for classifying the signatures automatically using machine learning rose to 85 per cent.

Biology might help in other ways too. Narayanan notes that if further study shows malware evolution follows some of the same rules as amino acids and proteins, our knowledge of biological systems could be used to help fight it.

Amid Palestinian protest, rocket hits Israel

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas strained to tamp down tensions in the West Bank as Palestinians protested by the thousands and called for a third intifada, and militants in Gaza broke a November cease-fire by firing a rocket into southern Israel.

"The Israelis want chaos.... We will not allow them to drag us into it and to mess with the lives of our children and our youth," Mr. Abbas said, according to Reuters, as he sought to cool tensions and cast the uptick in Palestinian anger as a result of Israeli incitement.

But Abbas is up against formidable voices who seem to see another uprising as the inevitable result of days of large-scale protests across the West Bank against conditions for Palestinian inmates in Israeli prisons, sparked by the Feb. 23 death of one such inmate.

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about Israel? Take the quiz

?This is the new intifada,? said Mustafa Barghouti, a rival to Abbas in the 2005 presidential election, according to Bloomberg. ?A popular resistance has started.? Calls for a third intifada come despite the fact that public sentiment still largely opposes a full uprising.

The Christian Science Monitor reported yesterday that the most recent protests come on top of frustration about the seemingly endless Israeli occupation and settlement growth, as well as Israeli and international inaction.

?The issue of the prisoners is only one point that created this eruption,? said Sheikh Issa Jaradat, the former mayor of Sair, at the funeral for deceased prisoner Arafat Jaradat. People filled every rooftop, balcony, and open patch of grass surrounding the village square as Jaradat?s coffin was carried through the crowd, sparking fierce whistling and a few gunshots.

?The fact that so many people are here shows that this is not just about the suffering of Sair. The whole West Bank is suffering,? says the sheikh. ?This could easily be the beginning of an intifada.?

But, as the Monitor reports, only 32 percent of Palestinians support a third intifada, according to a poll taken before the death of Arafat Jaradat, the Palestinian inmate. Sixty-five percent oppose it, with 41 percent of them saying it will hurt the Palestinian cause.

Indeed, such an uprising could work against Palestinian interests in several ways. It could bolster Israel?s argument that it has no partner for peace, enabling it to continue expanding settlements in the West Bank unfettered by negotiations. It could also provide Israeli justification for maintaining or increasing checkpoints, arrests, and administrative detention in the name of security.

Reuters reports that international leaders had hoped the unrest in the West Bank was dying down prior to the rocket attack from Gaza, for which the militant group Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility. The news agency described the attack as ?an apparent show of solidarity? with the protests. It was the first such attack since a cease-fire was signed in November to end eight days of Palestinian rocket fire and Israeli air strikes.

The Wall Street Journal reports that ?Israel is taking the unrest seriously,? with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holding ?security consultations? yesterday and sending a representative to Ramallah to urge the Palestinian Authority (PA) to calm the protesters.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Mr. Netanyahu, pinned blame for the protests, some of which turned violent, on PA officials, the Journal reports. "There were elements within the [Palestinian Authority] who were actually encouraging incitement and violence," Mr. Regev said. "The Palestinian Authority has an obligation to maintain law and order."

And Amos Gilad, an Israeli defense official, told Army Radio that ?It looks as if the Palestinian Authority is trying to walk a delicate tightrope: both raising unrest and displays of violence and not wanting the matter to spin out of control,? the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Americans go all out for their pets

BELLEVUE - Despite the economy's sluggish return, Americans weren't afraid to continue to splurge on their pets.

A new report showed pet lovers spent tens of billions.

And those in the pet industry here in Northeast Wisconsin, say locally, people spare no expense.

It's definitely not your average dog kennel at Canterbury Tails Pet Resort & Spa in Bellevue.

The little rooms have a bed, a view and a TV. You can rent one at $25 a day.

"We do provide standard kennels, but the clients demand for the room setting, has just sky rocketed," explained grooming manager Caitlyn Reed. "I mean, every other call we get is asking if the suite is available."

Employees say they can't seem to keep up with demand for the higher-end puppy stays. And they say most don't slack when it comes to food either.

"People were spending maybe a $1 per pound and now they're spending upwards of $3 or more per pound of higher quality food," Reed explained.

A recent report by the American Pet Products Association shows Americans spent $53 billion on their pets last year.

That's up five percent over the year before.

A little more than $4 billion was spent on services such as grooming and boarding.

The majority of the expenses, around $34 billion, came from food and vet care.

"Thousands I would say, upwards of probably $2,000 to $4,000 for some orthopedic issues on something in one knee, and then the other knee might go out at another day," explained Dr. Corinne Rosen.

Dr. Rosen at Packerland Veterinary Center says prices for services have gone up the past couple years.

However, she says pet owners seem to be more willing to go the extra mile than before. Primarily she says, because of the changing economy.

"They pretty much run our lives," said pet owner Jan Harrig of New Franken.

But when your pet is part of the family, sometimes there is no limit.

"They're spoiled and so they're used to it," Harrig said.

MetroPCS rakes in $1.3 billion for Q4 2012 thanks to 2.2 million new LTE customers

MetroPCS rakes in $13 billion for Q4 2012, bumps fullyear revenue by 10 percent over 2011 to $824M

Over a quarter of MetroPCS' customer base is now on LTE (26 percent), and the company made $1.3 billion in revenue for Q4 and $5.1 billion total in 2012 as a result, it said. Though revenue was down for Q4 over last year to $122 million compared to $215 million for Q4 2011, profits were up year-over-year by 10 percent to $824 million, and the company said it made a record $1.5 billion EBITDA (before taxes, etc.) The company attributes that in part to a 2.2 million LTE subscriber bump, an increase of 117 percent over Q3 2012, but indicated that it lost 93 thousand subscribers total over the same period. It added that churn (customers leaving to other carriers) fell to 3.4 percent, its lowest level ever. Meanwhile, the carrier said it's proposed Deutsche Telecom-backed merger with T-Mobile is moving along swimmingly with a definitive proposal filed yesterday. It anticipates "closing the transaction in early April" ahead of schedule, which it says would make MetroPCS "the leading value wireless carrier in the United States."

Christians, Muslims pray to halt Israeli security wall

Families in a West Bank town call on divine intercession to stop the construction of a barrier they say will separate residents from their own land. NBC News' Yara Borgal reports.

By Yara Borgal, Producer, NBC News

BEIT JALA, West Bank -- A West Bank community plants olive trees, even though many residents don?t think they will ever see them harvested. Any day, construction of Israel?s security wall could slice through this valley.?

?We are trying in a way to keep this land ? especially for the children of Beit Jala to feel a little bit of freedom,? said Maher Matar, a resident of the mostly Christian Palestinian community of 58 families.

Appeals to Israel?s courts have failed to stop the project, which Israel says is vital to protect it from terrorist attacks.

The impending decision has prompted both Christians and Muslims in the area to gather for weekly prayers they hope will stop Israel from building the separation wall.

While the International Criminal Court has said the wall is ?illegal? under international law, Israel maintains the structure is essential.

?It is important to remember that before the waves of Palestinian terror took 1,000 Israeli lives, there was no need for a fence. There was no need for a security barrier,? said Israeli Defense Ministry spokesman Josh Hantman. ?This barrier, it saves lives. And every inch of the barrier is open to judicial review and up for appeal.?

Israel has already completed 65 percent of the planned 435-mile barrier. Human rights organization B?Tselem says that if the wall is finished, 85 percent will fall on Palestinian land.

?People abroad they think we are terrorists,? said Elaine, a Beit Jala resident who would give only her first name.? ?We are not terrorists. We are fighting for our own rights. We are fighting for our own homes for our own land.??

Video: 2 vortex trails with 1 wing stroke

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

As of today, the Wikipedia entry for the hummingbird explains that the bird's flight generates in its wake a single trail of vortices that helps the bird hover. But after conducting experiments with hummingbirds in the lab, researchers at the University of California, Riverside propose that the hovering hummingbird instead produces two trails of vortices ? one under each wing per stroke ? that help generate the aerodynamic forces required for the bird to power and control its flight.

The results of the study could find wide application in aerospace technology and the development of unmanned vehicles for medical surveillance after natural disasters.

The researchers used high-speed image sequences ? 500 frames per second ? of hummingbirds hover-feeding within a white plume (emitted by the heating of dry ice) to study the vortex wake from multiple perspectives. They also used particle image velocimetry (PIV), a flow-measuring method used in fluid mechanics, to quantitatively analyze the flow around the hummingbirds. PIV allowed the researchers to record the particles surrounding the birds and extract velocity fields.

The films and velocity fields showed two distinct jets of downwards airflow ? one under each wing of the hummingbird. They also revealed that vortex loops around each jet are shed during each upstroke and downstroke.

The researchers therefore propose in their paper published online last month in the journal Experiments in Fluids that the hummingbird's two wings form bilateral vortex loops during each wing stroke, which is advantageous for maneuverability.

"Previous studies have indicated that slow-flying bats and faster flying birds produced different structures in their wakes," said Douglas Altshuler, formerly an assistant professor of biology at UC Riverside, whose lab led the research. "We have been investigating the wake structure of hovering hummingbirds because this allows us to decouple the effects of different types of wings ? bat versus bird ? from different forward flight speeds.

Hummingbirds each weigh 2-20 grams. Because they can hover with high precision, they are able to drink nectar from flowers without any jiggling movement to their bodies. Besides using upstrokes and downstrokes, hummingbirds can rotate their wings. They can even flap their wings from front to back with a 180-degree amplitude.

"We began this study to investigate how the hummingbird used its tail while hovering," said Marko Princevac, an associate professor of mechanical engineering and a coauthor of the research paper. "After all, many insects also hover, but they have no tail. Instead, however, our research showed something interesting about the hummingbird's wings: the bilateral vortex structure. Hummingbirds hovering should cost a lot of energy but these birds are able to hover for long periods of time. Ideally, unmanned vehicles need to be operated with a very limited energy supply, which is why understanding how the hummingbird maximizes its use of energy is tremendously beneficial."

The video shows that the hummingbird produces two trails of vortices -- one under each wing per stroke -- that help generate the aerodynamic forces it requires to power and control its flight. Credit: Altshuler Lab, UC Riverside.

Sam Pournazeri, a former Ph.D. graduate student in Princevac's lab and a co-author on the paper, explained that in a downstroke, the air pressure difference developed as a result of wing movement creates flow from the bottom to the top of the wing. The result is a circular movement or vortex.

"Based on theories in fluid mechanics, this vortex should close either on the wing/body or create a loop around it," he said. "It's these loops that provide circulation around the wings and cause the hummingbird to overcome its weight. Hovering requires the bird to create a lift that cancels its body weight. Although the two-vortex structure we observed increases the hummingbird's energy consumption, it provides the bird a big advantage: a lot more maneuverability."

Next, the research team plans to study the hummingbird in a wind tunnel to closely observe how the bird transitions from hovering to forward motion, and vice versa.

"Current technology is not successfully mimicking how living things fly," Princevac said. "Drones don't hover, and must rely on forward motion. Research done using hummingbirds, like ours, can inform the development of the next generation of drones."

Opera WebKit-based browser hands-on

Opera WebKitbased browser handson

Think Opera is content at 300 million? That would be a rather silly notion for any company, of course, and naturally the browser is bumping up its efforts by making the jump to WebKit. This move will make Opera even more tempting for Android (phone and tablet) users who would never have given the browser even a sideways glance previously. The newer, fancier Opera throws in a few extra features. First, there's a launch page called speed dial that looks an awful lot like what we've seen in older versions; you can customize a bunch of shortcuts and links based on your overall usage and personal preferences, and toss all of them in folders. There's also an off-road mode, which essentially gives you the option to switch over to Opera Mini for extra data compression for those times you need it -- this obviously comes in handy when you're reaching your data threshold or just in a low-reception area. Lastly, HTML5 support is built in, as we would come to expect with a new browser these days.

Though we were originally told in January that we could expect Android and iOS versions of the browser sometime this month, representatives at the company's booth at MWC noted that what we're seeing is actually a pre-beta version and the final product is "coming soon" with no specific timetable given. This doesn't surprise us, as the demonstration had its fair share of bugs, but we will reserve judgment until we see it in its final form. As we patiently wait for the browser to make its public appearance, you can pine for it by drooling over the images in our gallery below.

Sean Cooper contributed to this hands-on.

The Onion apologizes for offensive actress tweet

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Onion is apologizing for calling the 9-year-old star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" a vulgar and offensive name on Twitter, an attack that led to a firestorm online.

The satirical newspaper on Sunday referred to Quvenzhane Wallis with an expletive intended to denigrate women. The Onion was lambasted overnight and asked for forgiveness Monday.

"It was crude and offensive ? not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting," The Onion CEO Steve Hannah wrote on Facebook. "No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire."

Hannah said the offensive tweet was taken down within an hour and the newspaper has "instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures" to ensure it will never happen again. Those responsible would be disciplined, he added.

"Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry."

A message sent to Quvenzhane's representative seeking comment wasn't immediately returned Monday. She was the youngest-ever actress nominee at the Academy Awards.

The Onion's original tweet brought some calls for the fake news organization to publicly identify the writer of the tweet, vows to refuse to retweet its material, and requests from outraged consumers to email The Onion to complain.

Oscar host Seth MacFarlane also joked about the young star during the ceremony. Some found the quip offensive, albeit not to the degree of the outrage over The Onion's tweet. MacFarlane joked that "it'll be 16 years before she's too old for" George Clooney.

Despite the attack, Quvenzhane had some reason to stay positive Sunday. By the time she'd arrived at the Oscar telecast, she could boast that she had been cast to play Annie in a contemporized adaptation of the Broadway musical and the "Little Orphan Annie" comic strip to be directed by Will Gluck.

It wasn't the first time The Onion has gotten into hot water for trying to push its humor. Last year, the site attracted public ire for an image that showed an airliner about to crash into Chicago's Willis Tower. Despite an outcry, the Onion's marketing director refused to back down.

Last year, the joke site made international headlines when the online version of China's Communist Party newspaper hailed an Onion report naming North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as the "Sexiest Man Alive" ? apparently unaware it was satire.

In 2011, U.S. Capitol Police released a statement refuting tweets and an article claiming members of Congress had taken a group of schoolchildren hostage. It included a doctored picture of Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner holding a gun to a child's head.

The Chicago-based publication was founded in 1988 by two students in Madison from the University of Wisconsin. Starting as a local college newspaper, it became a national comedy institution and went online in 1996, and has since developed a television news parody.

The publication is distributed weekly in cities, but it has also embraced Twitter and has an app for the iPad and other tablets. It says it averages 40 million page views and roughly 7.5 million unique visitors per month.

How would you change Nokia's 808 Pureview

Nokia's 808 PureView. It's a Symbian phone... but it's got a magical camera. It's a Symbian phone... but... that lens! You can imagine the wrangling when people were deciding if they wanted to buy one of these last summer. On one hand, it was running a Zombie operating system with weak internals. On the other, it had a camera sensor that took truly beautiful images. So, for the merry few of you who purchased this handset, what was it like to use on a daily basis? Normally, we'd ask you to chime in with suggestion on how you'd change it, but let's be honest. If Nokia slapped this 41-megapixel sensor on a Lumia 920, we'd have difficulty looking at anything else.

CNOOC closes $15.1 billion acquisition of Canada's Nexen

TORONTO (Reuters) - The contentious $15.1 billion takeover of Canadian oil and gas company Nexen Inc by Chinese state-owned entity CNOOC Ltd closed on Monday, more than seven months after China's largest-ever foreign takeover was announced.

Nexen, based in Calgary, Alberta, said in a statement on Monday that the deal had closed and its shareholders would receive $27.50 in cash for each Nexen share.

Nexen said its common and preferred shares would be delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange in a few days, while its common shares were expected to cease trading on the New York Stock Exchange prior to the market opening on February 26.

The company said Kevin Reinhart would remain chief executive of Nexen, which will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of CNOOC.

Nexen also said it would have a new board chaired by Li Fanrong, who is CEO of CNOOC. Other members of the new Nexen board will be Reinhart, Fang Zhi, Barry Jackson, Thomas O'Neill and William Berry.

The takeover, originally announced in July, won approval from Canadian regulators in December. Earlier this month, CNOOC overcame its last major hurdle after the deal was cleared by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which had a say because of Nexen's exploration and production assets in the Gulf of Mexico.

The two companies have not disclosed what conditions were imposed by Canadian and U.S. regulators for the deal to win approval, but one of CNOOC's advisers said the parameters around the assurances were largely in line with expectations.

"The level of detail that was negotiated and the time-frames of those commitments, that was a bit of a surprise though," said Dan Barclay, who heads BMO Capital Markets' Canadian M&A group, which acted as one of CNOOC's financial advisors on the deal.

"What they (CNOOC) had signed up for in the beginning, they got in the end, only it was a bit more rigorous than where we had started," said Barclay.

The Nexen acquisition gives CNOOC new offshore production in the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and off western Africa, as well as producing properties in the Middle East and Canada.

In Canada, CNOOC gains control of Nexen's Long Lake oil sands project in the oil-rich province of Alberta, as well as billions of barrels of reserves in the world's third-largest crude storehouse - the oil sands in the province of Alberta.

LONG REVIEWS

Barclay said the approval process in Canada took roughly as long as the companies expected, while the process in the United States took longer.

Canada approved the takeover even though some members of the governing Conservative Party had misgivings about it. But the government said the CNOOC-Nexen was the last deal of its kind that it would approve, drawing a line in the sand against state-controlled companies taking any further majority stakes in the oil sands.

U.S. approvals dragged on as legislators examined whether the deal would threaten U.S. national security. A few years ago the United States, which has traditionally been more wary than Canada of Chinese investment, thwarted CNOOC's $18.5 billion bid for Unocal due to national security concerns.

The closing, on Monday, comes just as Nexen reported a net loss in its final full quarter as a reporting Canadian company. It said extended weakness in North American natural gas markets forced it to book a multi-million dollar asset impairment charge.

Nexen reported a fourth-quarter loss of C$6 million ($5.9 million), or 2 Canadian cents a share, compared with a year-ago profit of C$43 million, or 8 Canadian cents a share. Nexen said a combination of lower estimated future gas prices and revisions to oilfield abandonment costs prompted a C$237 million non-cash impairment charge in the recent quarter.

Nexen's U.S.-listed shares closed at $27.41 on the New York Stock Exchange on Monday.

Writing and Housekeeping | According To Hoyt

I have a confession to make.? I was one of those insane mothers who try to make sure their kids never come in contact with a particle of dirt.? This meant about half of everyday, usually while the babies were asleep, was spent scrubbing floors and moving furniture to vacuum behind.? On a rough estimate, that probably cost me a good 10 or so books by the age of 35.? It was probably ? oh, heck, surely ? excessive.

Kids who came to play with my kids, even well into elementary, used to say things like ?Your house is so clean.?

Then we moved to this house.? I?ve talked about before how this house seems to have a cloud of dolce far niente over it.? Which could be very nice, if we had maids and stuff (or staff.)

However, in retrospect I?m not even sure that?s true.? I mean, that there is a cloud of dolce far niente over the house.

What happened is that we moved here in 03, when I?d been informed my first series hadn?t done ?as well as expected? (which, speaking of pure evil and Random Penguins is funny considering within two years I?d outearned the advance for both number one and number two.? Since the advance back then were an estimation of what the book would make the author, saying books that earned royalties over the advance didn?t do as well as expected is duck speak.? The translation is actually this ?You earned more than we expected you to, given the crappy non-support and publicity we gave you ? but you didn?t become a miraculous bestseller, so we?re dropping you.?)

Anyway, because burning the publishing district was not an option even if it would have made me feel much better, and because I?m a human wave AUTHOR ? meaning I behave like a human wave character ? I said ?like h*ll you?ll fire me.* and spent the next couple of years furiously running just to stay in print.? The running included writing a lot of proposals, halves of some novels (that will now get finished) and apparently an entire medieval romance I have no memory of writing and I?m afraid of reading.? There was also a couple of stints in work for hire and ghosting.? I will not lie ? I would have quit writing ? probably ? sometime in the next two years when things weren?t BREAKING except that we were paying double mortgage, as we were still getting the other house ready to sell, then selling it.? So, I needed money for the double mortgage, which included a year where I made 5k from short stories.? (Do the math at around $300 each story.)

Because all my free time, I was working on the house in Manitou, to get it ready for sale, I wasn?t unpacking/cleaning.? I did the minimal unpacking to get the house functional but that was all.

Then we had the year of crisis with middle school and Number Two Son.

At the end of that, a certain pattern of living in this house had set in.? And unfortunately it wasn?t a very GOOD pattern.

I cleaned every week because I?m allergic to household dust, but furniture didn?t get moved, you didn?t look in drawers (except I organize my closet twice a year, otherwise I can?t find clothes) stuff just got piled in closets and the attic remained a disaster area.

And then I started getting ill ? a lot ? which meant fewer books got written and the cleaning was even more neglected.

Well? there is a possibility we will have to move in the next year or so ? and it would be sane to downsize if/when the boys leave.? (Though the advantage of this house for the times we live in is that it can easily fit two families.? ? three would be a bit cramped.)

So I started, desultorily, going through stuff, since the first order of business is ?cull crap? ? mostly paper books, since we now have a lot of them in electronic format, which thank G-d can?t collect dust.

And I?ve found that maybe the problem is not with the house, but with ourselves.? I.e., we took so long to get settled/get things started here, that by the time we did the clutter was well-night hopeless.? After five years the accumulation of dust in places I couldn?t reach without major reorganization started making me ill more often, and besides we were spending money to buy things we already had because we couldn?t find anything.? (Look, there might be a logical reason to have a collection of drill bits in my desk drawer of my writing desk.? Perhaps a character had told me she wanted to get drilled, who knows?? BUT when I needed those drill bits to fix the kitchen stool? well? I never thought to look there.? There were also two visa gift cards for the kids, given to us around the time we moved, which ended up at the back of my bedside table drawer, behind my weight in pens and about ten thousand hair clips.)

Now, I?m not going to tell you that I?m about to become the world?s best housekeeper.? I think my fans would rather I do three or four more books a year.? And G-d knows this is the last thing I wanted to be doing right now.? (And I have to do guest blogging today and tomorrow.? I just do.)? But those who have engaged in this type of work ? possibly not as epic ? will understand what I mean when I say that having lifted a corner of the mess, I now must continue until it?s done.

A lot of this, really, is ?moving in? and making this house functional to live in, as it never was.? Depending on whether or not it looks like re: staying or having to move, there might be wall painting this summer.? But for now, it?s just getting rid of furniture we don?t need.? Getting rid of stuff we no longer use (though the hair clips are a kludge.? I used them when I had hair so long I could ? and did, by accident ? sit on it.? Now I have it somewhere above my shoulders, so I don?t have that much use for ? fifty different ways to confine my hair.? I don?t intend to grow my hair that long again ? but then I never did, I just forgot to have it cut.? That?s what the first four years in this house were like.? I don?t have anywhere to store them, and no clue what to do with them.)

Now, I think I?m about at the point that I can relegate this to weekends ? I.e. do my usual lick and promise in the normal areas, but add one room that gets unpacked/organized/decluttered.? Which is good.? It means I can go back to doing the stuff all of us enjoy more.

The idea is that if I do this for a couple of months, then it will be easier to maintain the house and keep from getting sick, and finally fight off the lassitude of ?I can?t find anything and why bother.? At least that?s the idea.

However ? right now ? remember it?s been ten years of my not doing this, it means both the kids and the cats seem to think I?ve been possessed by a cleaning demon which has now spread to Dan who spent yesterday organizing his office, as the kids looked in horror.

Bear with me through late postings and such.? This is health related, though not in the normal way.? (For one, since there was mildew in the humidifier, I need to clean any place stuff might grow in the rest of the house.)

And I?m just trying to make time for the writing.
